When I put an audio CD in the DVD drive, it sees the disc as a blank CD-ROM, inviting me to copy files on to it. The driver is up to date and the device manager says that the drive is working correctly.. The drive didn't used to have this fault and was able to rip audio CDs.
I have even connecting an external DVD drive, (that works on another PC), and it failed to read the audio CD, also seeing it as a blank disc.
For what its worth the PC's drive is an HP PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH, ver 10.0.19041.1266
Any suggestions on how to get my PC being able to read audio CDs again would be most appreciated.

The wrong or incorrect app is assigned or is missing
I assume you use an app of some kind to rip the music. I use iTlunes but also have Nero.
Bring up the control panel and select Hardware and Sound
then select AutoPlay -> Change Default Settings
Select "Audio CD" and then pick one of the options
I usually leave them all as "Take no action" as I like to run the application manually.
If I put in a blue-ray disk and want to copy it I run DVDFab ripper before inserting. If I want to play the movie (not copy it) then I run PlayerFab before inserting the disk.
If you are using iTunes and have a collection of eBay used Audio CD's to rip then best is to run iTunes and tell it automatically rip all the music to whatever format you like. That way can just shuffle CDs and not have to tell the app what to do.
