Had my new wireless mouse for about 6 weeks now and it has started squeeking every time I scroll.  Will WD40 fix it, or is that not a good idea?

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A squeaking noise from your wireless mouse scroll wheel can definitely be annoying. Here's what you need to know:

WD-40 is not recommended for electronic devices like a mouse. It’s a penetrating oil and solvent, which can:

  • Damage plastic components
  • Leave a residue that attracts dust
  • Potentially interfere with the internal electronics

Safe Alternatives

Here are a few safer steps you can try:

Compressed Air:
Blow compressed air around the scroll wheel to dislodge any dust or debris that might be causing the squeak.

Isopropyl Alcohol (90% or higher):
Lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and gently clean around the scroll wheel. Avoid letting any liquid seep inside.

Dry Lubricant (Optional):
If you're comfortable opening the mouse (and it's out of warranty), you can apply a plastic-safe dry lubricant like silicone spray or PTFE (Teflon) spray to the scroll mechanism. Use very sparingly.

Since your mouse is only 6 weeks old, it will be under warranty. If the squeak persists or worsens, please visit nearest HP authorized service center with the mouse and invoice copy, the service team will check and assist you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
