Hi,
my HP motherboard has broken ( some power issue till became dead),
i've replaced the motherboard with a Z97M-Plus and PSU with a Seasonic 550W gold, but my internal USB 3.0 connectors attached to the IO Top USB2.0-3.0/CardReader/Audio OUT not working at all ( they were working on the old plate that broke).
USB 2.0 / Card Reader an Audio jack of front panel is working, backplate USB 2.0-3.0 works, only thing not working is the internal USB3.0 header.
Is there a special header on broken HP motherboard vs the one on the Z97.
I dont understand why is not working , is not a standard header?
PS:
I'm sorry if my english is not too explicit.

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
As I understand, IO port does not work,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:
-
Device Manager: You might be able to troubleshoot the problem using the Device Manager.
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
Follow the instructions below, depending on how your device is listed in the Device Manager:
-
Unknown Device: A driver is not installed or was not set up correctly (Such as, when a USB device was removed while Windows was still setting it up as newly found hardware.). To correct this problem, uninstall and reinstall the driver for the device, as follows:
-
Disconnect the device.
-
Right-click Unknown Device, and select Uninstall.
The Confirm Device Uninstall window opens.
-
Click the box next to Delete the driver software for this device (if it is shown).
-
Click OK.
-
Restart the computer.
-
Reinstall the device per the manufacturer instructions.
-
-
Other Device: The USB ports are working but device drivers need to be installed. To correct this problem:
-
Disconnect the USB device, and wait 20 seconds.
-
Install the drivers per the manufacturer instructions.
-
-
Device Name is shown: USB ports and basic plug-and-play are working correctly. There is a physical problem with the device or there is an issue with the device drivers. One of the following steps might resolve the problem:
-
Restart the computer and try connecting the USB device again.
-
Disconnect the USB device, uninstall the device software (if any), then reinstall the software.
-
Uninstall and reinstall the device as follows:
-
With the device connected, right-click the name of the device in Device Manager and select Uninstall.
The Confirm Device Uninstall window opens.
-
Click the box next to Delete the driver software for this device (if it is shown).
-
Click OK.
-
After the name of the device is removed, disconnect the device and restart the computer.
-
Try installing the device again per the manufacturer instructions.
-
-
If the device is a communication device, double-click the device name and set the COM port to a different number; from COM4 to COM3 for example.
-
-
Device is not listed: If the device is not listed at all, go to the next step.
-
-
Uninstalling USB Root Hubs: Uninstalling USB Root Hubs forces the system to reinstall the root hubs next time the computer is started. Use the following steps to uninstall USB Root Hubs:
-
Disconnect all USB devices connected to the computer except a USB mouse and keyboard (if in use). This includes hubs, thumb drives, printers, and cameras.
-
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
The Device Manager window opens.
-
Double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list.
Figure: Universal Serial Bus controllers list in Device Manager window
-
Right-click the first USB Root Hub in the list, then select Uninstall.
Figure: Uninstall selection in the Device Manager window
Click OK to confirm.
-
Continue uninstalling all USB Root Hubs listed.
-
Close Device Manager and restart the computer.
-
If the USB device that is having problems came with software and it was not previously installed, install the software now, following the manufacturer instructions.
-
Reconnect the USB device that was having problems and test it to see if it works.
-
Also, try steps mentioned below "Front USB ports do not work on a desktop computer" from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03327635#AbT4.
You could update BIOS from the manufacturer website.
If the issue persists, you could replace the part with the part number given below:
809381-001: Top I/O - 2USB3.0, 2USB2.0, Audio, 7-in-1 CR
Cheers 🙂
Have a great day 🙂
And your device is up and running again,
For I shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
Keep me posted,

non HP answer( I retired)
load the driver for you PC off the HP website matching w10-64
for the driver update solution.
be web connected first OR PNP can fail. (plug and pray needs the internet 1/2 the time or more)
may HP machines have aux, USB card, or chip, called USB3. (before Intel added this to the ICH big chip)
the USB2 works but the USB3 is dead. so very common this is.
this is for 3 reasons (besides OS corruption)
1: you failed to load the HP custom driver that chip./OS. (why skip step 1, ?)
2: you were not internet connected when you did the right click update USB3, with Device manager.. oops.
3: you discovered that microsoft does not support this chip as is common. for 10 year old PCs sure.(if is) IDK, if MS fails see #1 above. if I had your IDs codes, for USB3, VEN=xxxx and DEV=zzzz? id tell you in seconds flat. (magic)
on my 2010 HP laptop MS does not support my NEC USB chip at all,, only HP and from NEC direct from japan maker.
just one example of many.
I also dont know if you mother board is the right one, the full p/n was not stated, so it can be many .

Hi,
and thanks for answers ,
but i think i was not understood,
it was not about the USB2.0 & 3.0 on the back (which works in windows and bios), it was about the internal USB 3.0 header specifically made for connections to the front panel, that cable which make connection between motherboard and front panel USB 3.0 (not USB 2.0).
That's why i wanted to know if that cable from front panel has any modified header, pins (made to work only on HP motherboards) or is a classic one, standard connection.
USB 3.1 Gen 1on my new motherboard is not managed thru third party chipset, is managed by Z97chipset itself and has the last bios from manufacturer site.
Is there a pin difference between USB3.0 and USB 3.1Gen1? from what i see on web only difference is on name....
