I naively purchased a Prodesk 600 G4 minitower, partly because of the 4K designation in its specs, only to find out it is virtually useless at that resolution. Not interested in gaming, just watching 4K video and doing a bit of photo/video editing.

I'm looking for the least expensive and easiest way to accomplish this. SO....

1) Is there possibly a suitable card that won't require a power supply replacement? If not, what wattage would I need? (I believe it's current 250W.)

2) What low-cost cards are compatible with my expansion slots, which some say make this difficult?

3) Should I just abandon this and buy a different computer? (I paid about $350 for this refurb.)

Thanks so much for your help!

Hello @NellieFox ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

For upgrading your HP ProDesk 600 G4 Minitower, here are some general guidelines to consider when selecting a GPU and power supply:

GPU Recommendations

When selecting a GPU, consider:

  1. Form Factor and Compatibility: Ensure the GPU fits within the physical space of the minitower. Low profile or compact GPUs might be necessary if space is limited.

  2. Power Requirements: Check the power consumption of the GPU and ensure it is supported by your current power supply or an upgraded one.

  3. Performance Needs: Choose a GPU that fits your performance requirements, whether it's for gaming, professional design software, or general computing.

  4. NVIDIA or AMD: Both offer a range of GPUs from entry-level to high-performance. Depending on your needs, models like NVIDIA GTX/RTX series or AMD Radeon may fit your requirements.

Power Supply (PSU) Recommendations

  1. Wattage: Ensure the PSU provides sufficient wattage to support all your components, including the new GPU. A good rule of thumb is to add the power requirements of all components and choose a PSU with a bit of extra margin (around 50-100W more).

  2. Efficiency Rating: Consider PSUs with an 80 PLUS certification for better energy efficiency.

  3. Connectors: Verify that the PSU has the necessary connectors for your GPU (e.g., 6-pin, 8-pin).

  4. Size and Compatibility: Ensure the PSU fits in your minitower case and supports the motherboard connection type.

Additional Considerations

  • BIOS Compatibility: Ensure your system's BIOS is up to date to support newer GPUs.
  • Thermal Management: Ensure adequate cooling is available within the case to support higher power and heat-generating components.

For specific product models, it's recommended to check with HP's official hardware upgrade guides, or consult HP support to ensure compatibility and optimal performance for your ProDesk 600 G4. Always refer to the technical specifications of the products you are considering to ensure they meet your system's requirements.

4k at what resolution and color depth?

For digital cinematography, it is 4096 × 2160 (DCI 4K);

for digital television, it is 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD), typically with a 16:9 aspect ratio

the nvidia 1050/1060 low profile card models without a AUX GPU power connector is just about your only choice anything more powerful will require a higher wattage power supply that has a AUX GPU connector and your "sff" system does not support such a supply
