The machine was purchased while we lived for a time in Germany, so it was a "German Build". I'm trying out some config changes to speed it up, but the BIOS is in German. I've seen some FORUM suggested fixes and tried them, but no joy...
I've taken the latest BIOS update available on the support site, but didn't get an option to determine the language...so it was also in German...I like the Germans...but I'd prefer my BIOS in English....Any suggestions...

Hi,
The HP version 8 BIOS should have a language selection on the BIOS setup screen. Tap the ESC key after power on and select arrow down to change language. Select Deutsch and then go to Computer Setup and Save changes, confirm yes and exit.
Be sure to have a wired English keyboard on hand.
What are you going to do about the OS since it was installed in German? If the OS was installed in German, then I suggest that you thoroughly research the OS changes or be prepared to install W8 using English installation media. Do the MS research before changing the BIOS.

Hi Big_Dave....Thanks for the advice...unfortunately I'm not getting the option you suggest..and when I do...It does not have the desired outcome...let me explain.
Repeated stabbing at the ESC key during a restart brings up a black screen with some Hardware Information (In German) that begins....
Prozessor: Intel (R) Core(TM) i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz
Prozesessorgeschwindigkeit: 3100MHz
L1/L2/L3 Cache-Gr...This is then overlayed with another screen in Blue which obliterates the remaining text on the background Black screen...So in focus is a Blue Dialogue Box, occupying the central area of the screen entitled StartMenu (agin in German)...I'm offered a series of options..
"
F1 Systeminformationen
F2 Systemdiagnose
F9 Optionen fur das Boot-Gerat
F10 BIOS-Setup
F11 Systemwiederherstellung
F12 Netzwerstart
EINGABETAST_ mit dem Starten fortfahren "
So I'm not presented with an option to select a language...
If however I select F2...The following dialogue box which is a Diagnostic for UEFI...does offer an option to select "Sprache"...but that seems only to hold for the diagnostics sub menu...as when I exit after selecting English...all the following screens are still in German.
If I select F10 ...I get the BIOS Settings screen...In German...that I arrive at if I repeatedly stab the F10 key during a Restart...
Which is right back where I began this quest...as there is no language selection available within the BIOS Settings Tabs....
Sorry for the rather wordy response.
I selected the english option during the first boot of the OS...so I don't need to alter the Language setting at the OS level...simply the BIOS level...
When I downloaded the BIOS update from the HP site....I was not given a language option....
The BIOS version is 80.13 Rev A and the dowloaded file was sp66184.exe...
Any ideas ?
Regards,
Brendan

Hi,
Different versions of the BIOS etc. will have different methods to choose language.
My advice was based on using UEFI diagnostics version 6.6 and a different BIOS than you are probably using.
You might be able to change the entire BIOS by doing a flash using the UEFI diagnostic flash drive approach. The procedure for doing this method perhaps was posted on this forum long ago. I haven't done a search as not many have even asked or thought about using this method to flash the BIOS. Perhaps HP Support has the documentation on how to flash the BIOS using the UEFI diagnostics flash drive method.
Another method is to download the BIOS update on another PC and then execute the update and create the Recovery BIOS flash on an USB2 flash drive (4GB should be more than enough). However, this method for creating the USB flash may not work on all platforms. The USB drive will get formated so it should be blank when you start. When finshed creating the USB BIOS flash drive then insert it into your powered off PC. Now power on the the PC. Your PC may reboot up to three times with the indicator lights on the keyboard flashing and the screen appearing blank for a short time.
BTW---BIOS 8.21 appears to be the latest BIOS update.
Good luck.
