Need to upgrade ram, but no open slots. Do I have to discard current ram chips?

Yes, for best RAM performance, it is recommended to upgrade both RAM modules, so that you got the same brand, model and capacity.

 

Your HP ENVY Desktop PC TPE01-3000i (4M0M1AV) can be fitted with up to 2 x 32GB of DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, DIMM (UDIMM), 288-pin RAM sticks, but you probably don't need that much RAM.

 

An affordable yet quality RAM upgrade option would be this 2 x 16GB dual-rank (2Rx8) RAM kit: https://www.amazon.com/Timetec-3200MHz-PC4-25600-Unbuffered-Computer/dp/B07QRVNB26/ref=sr_1_3?dib=ey....
