I wanted upgrade the graphics card on my 40 L Omen, currently it’s using 4060 ti and I wanted to use 5060 ti. After I removed the old drivers and the shutdown the pc and installed the new 5060 the screen would go black but you still hear the audio it seemed like there was a display issue but all connections are fine. There’s 2 cables in the omen 40 L p1-9 and p1-10 I started using 10 and the game was running as smooth as ever finally it felt like I got somewhere. Next day same problem. Does anyone know if omen hard locks their systems to specific card? The bios just locks the ram sticks right?

@Movedinch,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Firstly, the RTX 50X0 family is compatible with HP OMEN 40L platforms, such as this OMEN by HP 40L GT21-0xxx User shows with an RTX 5080HP OMEN by HP 40L Gaming Desktop GT21-0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Meaning, the HP OMEN 40L (GT21-0xxx series) does not lock you into specific GPUs.

Your issue sounds like a display output or driver-related problem, not a hardware or BIOS lock. Here are a few steps to help resolve the black screen:

Recommended Steps:

  1. Cleanly Remove Old Drivers

  2. Check Display Output Ports

    • Make sure your monitor is plugged into the graphics card, not the motherboard.

    • Try all available HDMI/DP ports on the new GPU -some cards only activate certain ports until drivers are installed.

    • The P1-9 and P1-10 you mentioned may be different ports on the card itself. Stick with the topmost port for initial boot.

  3. BIOS Settings (Optional and if available)

    • Check BIOS for “Primary Display Adapter” and set it to PCIe/PEG (not Auto or iGPU).

    • Make sure your BIOS is up to date via HP Support.

  4. Disable Fast Startup & Hybrid Sleep (Optional and if available)

    • Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Turn off Fast Startup.

    • Under advanced power settings, disable Hybrid Sleep.

Troubleshooting Tip:

Try your 5060 Ti in another PC if possible. If it works fine there, then it's not the card -it's likely Windows driver confusion or a BIOS display preference.

Hope this helps! Your OMEN 40L is fully capable of running the RTX 5060 Ti. This should just be a minor setup hiccup, not a system limitation.

Let me know how it goes!

@Movedinch,

Btw, When I said:

“Stick with the topmost port for initial boot.”

I meant:

  • When first installing a new GPU like the 5060 Ti, use the topmost (leftmost) display output port -typically the first DisplayPort or HDMI near the top edge of the card.

  • This ensures the best chance of getting a signal before drivers load, especially during BIOS or Safe Mode.

  • Once everything is installed and working, the other ports usually become active.

So I launched in safe mode for both the 4060 and 5060, uninstalled any previous drivers through DDU, then reinstalled nvidia and downloaded drivers nvidia selected with a clean install but the option for PCie is grayed out, but it was selected anyway. It worked, but as soon as I started to do anything within the hour the screen went black again, I switched the DP ports to see if it had switched on its own, then I tried the HDMI port but still nothing. When you say to make it’s not plugged in the motherboard you mean the motherboard where the cpu is mounted or another motherboard?

HP Recommended

@Movedinch,

What I meant is that once you install a graphics card, the motherboard's video port(s) are automatically disabled, and only the video output ports on your graphics card are enabled.

I followed all of the steps correctly, I also went in safe mode to install the drivers, something important that I should add is when I reboot in safe mode before I can I have to input a Microsoft recovery key. Should be doing that?

I’m not sure what it is I’m doing wrong but I still get a black screen once my pc boots up it loses connection to the display somehow, the 4060 has no issues whatsoever but as soon as I enter a new GPU it won’t give me a second to do anything

@Movedinch,

Regarding the Microsoft recovery key:

It’s normal for Windows to occasionally ask for a Microsoft recovery key (also known as a BitLocker recovery key) if BitLocker is enabled on your system drive. This can happen after making changes to the system configuration -like entering Safe Mode, updating the BIOS, or installing new hardware or drivers -because BitLocker treats these as potential security risks.

If you're being prompted for the recovery key every time you reboot into Safe Mode, it's likely because BitLocker is protecting your system and sees Safe Mode as a "startup environment change."

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Check if BitLocker is enabled:

    • Press Windows + R, type control, hit Enter.

    • Go to System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption.

    • If it says “BitLocker On” for your OS drive, that's the reason for the recovery key prompt.

  2. Should you be entering the key every time?

    • It’s not ideal to have to enter it every time, but it's a safeguard.

    • If you're just troubleshooting temporarily, you could suspend BitLocker:

      • In the BitLocker settings, click Suspend protection before entering Safe Mode.

      • Don’t forget to resume BitLocker afterward.

  3. Do not turn off BitLocker permanently unless you're confident it’s necessary and understand the risks (loss of encryption).

  4. Keep your BitLocker recovery key safe:

@Movedinch,

Getting back at your new graphics card:

Summary: points to consider regarding the RTX 5060 Ti not working:

  1. BIOS Compatibility
    HP’s OEM BIOS may need an update to properly initialize newer-generation GPUs like the RTX 5060 Ti. Even though the 4060 Ti is also a 40-series card, NVIDIA and board partners sometimes require a firmware handshake that fails on older BIOS versions for newer cards.

  2. UEFI/GOP Support
    The RTX 5060 Ti may require UEFI boot mode with full GOP (Graphics Output Protocol) support. Make sure:

    • Secure Boot is enabled.

    • CSM (Compatibility Support Module) is disabled in the BIOS.

    • Your system is booting in UEFI mode, not Legacy.

  3. PCIe Power and Board Design
    Double-check:

    • Whether the RTX 5060 Ti requires a 12VHPWR adapter or specific PSU rail support.

    • If you're using any risers or extenders, eliminate them from the equation.

  4. Here are a few points to consider regarding the RTX 5060 Ti not working:

      • If you're using any risers or extenders, eliminate them from the equation.

    4. Early Driver or VBIOS Bugs
      Since the RTX 5060 Ti is new, your unit might have a buggy VBIOS or firmware that may not yet be fully validated on prebuilt systems like the OMEN 40L. If available, try the card in another modern UEFI PC or check for a VBIOS update from the GPU vendor.

    5. Test The RTX 5060 Ti in Another PC
      There is a chance that the RTX 5060 Ti could be defective. In order to eliminate that possibility, see if the card works on another PC platform.

Summary:

  • Your Safe Mode recovery key prompt is likely due to BitLocker and can be managed.

  • The RTX 5060 Ti issue seems to stem from BIOS/firmware-level compatibility, not hardware failure -especially since the 4060 Ti works fine.

Let me know if you're able to test the 5060 Ti in another UEFI system or have details on your OMEN 40L BIOS version. That may help narrow things down further.

I downloaded the most up to date bios for my PC through HPs website but still the graphics will not stay consistent it starts up at the beginning during the launch I download the drivers, it worked for a few minutes then loses display but the PC still runs. So I thought it could be that it’s only displaying from hdmi, still no display. Could the bios be outdated due to the computer being discontinued, and making the bios up for it old
