A few days ago I purchased an OmniDesk M03-0044. There is a light whistling noise coming from the bottom back of the computer (maybe the fan?). It is constant. Is this typical of this computer, or do I need to take it back to Best Buy to have it checked out?

A constant fan noise would not be a good thing.

The power supply fan or the graphics card fan(s) should not be running constantly.

And all fans should be relatively silent, when they do run, unless you are stress testing the PC's graphics card and/or the CPU.

I would do a refund/exchange if this is possible.

Thanks for responding. But I really wish people could get together on this. The HP rep who worked with me on it went through a BIOS update and other checks and finally said it had to be a Windows failure, which required a fresh install from the cloud. The fan still runs all the time. Then he said it must be a hardware failure and I should return it to the store or send it to HP for repair. But there are lots of people who say it is no problem if the processor fan runs all the time, including an HP rep in a discussion on their website (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Fan-always-running-even-when-idl...) . Most of the discussions have to do with fast running and noisy fans. Mine is neither. This isn't confined to only HP computers. I've read the same claim about other brands.

So who do I believe? Do I have to track down the designer of the OmniDesk models to get the final word? I'm leaning toward accepting the verdict that a fan running continually isn't a problem, that it keeps the processor temperature at a low level.

My pleasure.

The processor fan would always run. This fan would ramp up when the CPU is doing a heavy workload which will create heat.

Installed case fans will always run and ramp up as case temperatures rise due to: increased processor and graphics card heat.

But the power supply fan and the graphics card fan have silent modes. Both fans should be off until each component hits a specific temperature.

I thought the fan noise you are hearing is annoying. Constant whistling would annoy me.

PC Fans should make a low whirring sound when the PC is idling or doing low level tasks such as: surfing the Internet, watching a video, or doing office work: creating spreadsheets and other documents.

Maybe one of your PC's fans has coil whine or turbulence is happening.

No need to worry if the fan noise is tolerable.
