Hp pavillion, 3 months out of warranty. Screen just stopped working. Didn't drop it, move it or even touch it. I was just working and the screen went blank and never came back on.

I've tried troubleshooting and that didn't work so I took it to a repairman. I I've been quoted £275 for repair. Considering I've only had this laptop for 1 year 3 months paying nearly 1/2 the cost again of the laptop for a fault is awful.

Hi @BillFrampton

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Since the screen has failed outside of warranty, the options are unfortunately limited, but here are some structured steps you can follow to make the best decision:

Diagnostic Steps

  • External Display Test: Connect your laptop to an external monitor using HDMI or another compatible port. If the external display works, the issue is isolated to the built-in screen or its connections.
  • Display Reset: Hold down the power button for 15 seconds to force a hardware reset, then restart. This can sometimes restore functionality if the system is stuck.
  • BIOS Check: Power on and immediately press the BIOS access key (usually F10 or Esc). If the BIOS screen does not appear, this further confirms a hardware-level display issue.

Repair Considerations

  • Screen Replacement: The quoted £275 is consistent with OLED panel replacements, as these are more expensive than standard LCDs. The cost reflects both the part and labor.
  • Authorized Service: Ensure the repair is done by a qualified technician using genuine parts. This helps maintain performance and reliability.
  • Alternative Options: Compare the repair cost against the value of a new device. If the repair is close to half the cost of a new laptop, some users choose to invest in a replacement instead.

Preventive Measures

  • Power Management: Use balanced or recommended power settings to reduce strain on the display.
  • Environment: Avoid prolonged exposure to heat or humidity, as OLED panels are more sensitive to environmental conditions.
  • Regular Updates: Keep system firmware and drivers updated to ensure optimal hardware communication.

Would you be able to provide me with the correct part number if I provide the serial number?

Thanks for replying @BillFrampton

Sure, please share the serial number in private message and would be glad to check and let you know the part number.

To check the HP part number for a particular model, the most reliable method is to use HP PartSurfer, HP’s official database for service parts. Here’s how you can do it:

Steps to Find HP Part Numbers

Go to HP PartSurfer
Visit HP PartSurfer (official HP site).

Enter Product Information
You can search using:

  • Product name (e.g., HP Pavilion 15)
  • Serial number (s/n) – unique to your device
  • Product number (p/n) – usually found on the service tag or label
  • Model description (for selected models)

Browse Results

  • The site will display a list of parts associated with your model.
  • You can view part numbers, descriptions, and sometimes even exploded diagrams.

Confirm Compatibility

  • Double-check that the part number matches your exact model variant.
  • Some parts differ slightly between regional versions or configurations.
