According to the Crucial SSD sales support who helped me by looking it up, my OMEN 45L can use an M.2 NVMe SSD with or without a heatsink. Since it would be my secondary drive, I bought one without a heatsink. When I opened my case to put it in, a label inside said "Must install SSD with heatsink". Is it needed or not? I also read if an SSD rarely gets up to a certain temperature, it could reduce its lifespan. (I find that hard to believe).
BTW, my PC identified online as GT22-1000i but the label on my case says GT22-1470SE

@Steve221, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Installing M.2 NVMe SSD in OMEN 45L!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The OMEN 45L gaming desktops are built for top-notch performance, and they come with various components, including M.2 NVMe SSDs. While you can technically use these SSDs with or without a heatsink, there are some best practices to keep in mind to ensure your hardware lasts and performs well.
Why Use a Heatsink for Your M.2 NVMe SSD?
- Thermal Management: M.2 NVMe SSDs can get pretty hot during heavy use. A heatsink helps manage this heat effectively.
- Performance Stability: High temperatures can cause the SSD to slow down (thermal throttling) to cool off, which affects performance.
- Longevity: Consistently high temperatures can wear out your SSD faster, potentially leading to failure over time.
Manufacturer's Recommendation
Inside your OMEN 45L case, there's a label that says "Must install SSD with heatsink." This means HP recommends using a heatsink with any M.2 NVMe SSD in this system to keep things cool and running smoothly. It's usually best to follow this advice to avoid any issues.
What You Should Do
- Install a Heatsink: If your SSD didn't come with a heatsink, consider buying one that fits and installing it. This aligns with the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Monitor Temperatures: Use system monitoring tools to keep an eye on your SSD's temperatures. If they run high, a heatsink might be necessary.
Conclusion
For your OMEN 45L, it's a good idea to install the M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink. This will help keep your system stable and extend the life of your SSD, matching the system's requirements.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
