So I recently rebooted my old HP Compaq computer and wiped everything in hopes to use it for my personal needs and it works perfectly fine but it’s a little slow and I was going to upgrade some of the hardware like some new ram, an SSD, and maybe a GPU but the issue is that because it’s such a slim case I don’t know what Graphics card would fit into it, my Nvidia 1060 that I planned to put in it is ever so slightly too big and I have no idea what graphics card would be able to fit in my case while still providing an upgrade from the current performance. I don’t know what the exact model of HP Compaq it is but I do know that it is the same case used in the HP Elite 8300, 8200, and 8100 SFF models.

you have some "limited choices"
1 replace the existing 65 watt cpu with a low power (35 watt "s" suffix cpu) doing so will free up 30 watts that can now be used for a video card that draws more than HP's stated 30 watt limit
note you may already have a "S" suffix cpu installed as both versions were offered by HP
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03343457#AbT1
if you have 4 dimms installed, change them for 2 higher capacity dimms
IE- 4 4Gb dimms = 16GB replace with two 8 Gb dimms (saves 8 watts)
change Mech drive to SSD, saves approx. 10 - 15 watts
leave all pci-e slots empty, the stock supply (240 watts) will power a system with all pci-e slots filled, one or two mech drives
and all dimm slots filled
if you install a low power cpu 2, dimms, and only one ssd ,with no add-in pci-e cards then you can safely run a LOW PROFILE video card that draws up to 75 watts and does not require a "Aux GPU" power jack such as the nvidia 1050/1050 TI

DGroves' suggestion is certainly one option worthy of due consideration.
Another option would be to use a "24 Pin to 6 Pin ATX Power Adapter Cable" in order to use an externally parked 500+ watt standard ATX 24-pin power supply to power your HP Elite 8300 SFF AND your graphics card like I did with two HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF's. I just checked: the #1, #2, #3, #5, #6 happen to be my benchmarks with different 6300 SFF configurations and are still the best performing 6300 SFF's overall on this benchmarking site: UserBenchmark: HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF Compatible Components.
If interested, all the same modifications I used for the 6300 SFF apply to your 8300 SFF, as can be seen here in my HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF legacy upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF - HP Support Community - 8184303.
Because my first 6300 SFF fitted with an i7-3770K worked so well as a lean-mean gaming platform for one of my kids, I created a second 6300 SFF this time fitted with a Xeon E3-1290 V2 processor -which, by the way, I was told by an expert would not work because HP didn't list the Xeon processors as approved CPU's. Well, the Xeon works. Very well, in fact.
Here's a link for a 24 Pin to 6 Pin ATX Power Adapter Cable: Amazon.com: COMeap 24 Pin to 6 Pin ATX Power Adapter Cable for HP Z220 Z230 SFF MT TWR Series 4000 6..., which should work for your 8300 SFF. To be 100% sure, please look at your power supply's "P2" connector, and see if it matches the picture below:
And in my opinion, I wouldn't change your i5-3570. This processor compares very well with an i7-3770 or i7-3770K.
With a decent 500+ watt ATX power supply hooked up, the sky is the limit for your 8300 SFF when it comes to (externally parked) graphics cards. Check this out: UserBenchmark: HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF Compatible Components. Trust me, the RTX 3070, RX 5700 XT, RTX 2070 etc. seen here are almost certainly not fitted inside the case.
Hope this helped.
Kind Regards,

while using a external ATX supply does work, i wonder if for some SFF systems removing the board/cables from a atx supply would allow it to be mounted inside a SFF case
or using a commercial power supply might work mouser lists 3.3/5/12 volts units
130 watt unit
possibly a project for NonSequitur777
