Ive gotten alot of mixed information on this. I have an HP Omen 30L with 2×16GB HyperX RGB DDR4-3200 sticks (running at CL21/22). I'm looking to upgrade to 4×16GB and want to run at CL16 if possible. Just wondering what to get and if its possible to just swap out ram that has different CL? Any compatibility issues I should know about?

@AGP27, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding RAM Upgrade for OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-1380z!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Upgrading the RAM in your HP OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-1380z to achieve a lower CAS latency (CL) can enhance performance. Your current setup includes 2×16GB HyperX RGB DDR4-3200 running at CL21/22. You wish to upgrade to 4×16GB with CL16.

Considerations for Upgrading RAM to CL16

Compatibility:

  • Ensure the new RAM modules are compatible with your motherboard and support dual channel architecture.
  • Your OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-1380z likely supports DDR4 RAM modules. Verify that the new modules you intend to purchase match the form factor and pin configuration (288-pin DDR4).

Matching RAM Modules:

  • It's generally recommended to use RAM modules that are identical in terms of speed, size, and latency to avoid any compatibility issues.
  • Mixing RAM with different CL ratings might result in the system defaulting to the highest latency (e.g., CL21/22).

BIOS Settings:

  • You might need to access the BIOS to ensure that the RAM runs at the desired timings.
  • Check if the BIOS supports XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) which can automatically set the RAM to run at the best possible timings.

Manufacturer Specifications:

  • Refer to the motherboard specifications to ensure it supports the desired RAM configuration:
    • For example, motherboards like OasisOC and Hana used in OMEN 30L support various RAM configurations and speed settings.
    • Ensure your motherboard can handle the new RAM configuration at CL16.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
