Decided to upgrade the CPU on my 8917 motherboard (Blizzard OC on Omen40L GT21-0024) from 12700k to an i9-13900k or 14900k, now that the issues with those CPUs have been fully resolved.

Upgraded to the latest BIOS: f.55 and plugged in a 14900k. Computer shuts down immediately. I thought that perhaps there's a problem with the 14900k I got, but putting it into another computer, it works fine.Exact same situation with a 13900k also!

I put back my old 12700k into the 8917 motherboard... and the computer boots back normally.

Went through BIOS update history from HP, and saw that versions f.80 and f.81 had previously been released for this motherboard. Since the notes explicitly said that these versions introduced support for the 13th & 14th gen CPUs, I thought perhaps versions f.8x were needed on my motherboard for 13th/14th gen cpus. I was unable to upgrade f.55 to either f.81 or f.80. Computer says bad BIOS. After a painful process, reverted back to f.55, and computer boots fine (with 12700k).

Thinking that perhaps because release date of f.55 was *after* that of f.80 or f.81, the UEFI/BIOS management S/W was unhappy accepting those versions. So I changed BIOS to version f.50. Computer boots fine (again only with 12700k), but can't upgrade BIOS to f.80.

What else can I do to get my computer to accept a 13900k/14900k cpu??

The 8917 motherboard page says it supports 13th & 14th gen CPUs. What gives?? Also, I read somewhere that HP extended the warranty of desktops for 13th/ 14th gen CPUs; does this apply to me?

Greetings @rm2d2

Welcome to the HP Forum.

The latest 8917 MB BIOS update, I could find, is version F.55 at this Site.

I don't think the HP BIOS F.8x versions are compatible with the 8917 MB.

Don't mess around with BIOS updates. Stay with F.55.

I have no idea why your PC can't POST when trying a 13900K or 14900K CPU??

Try a BIOS reset. Save and exit.

Let the PC cycle. Shut the PC down at the Windows sign in screen.

Install a different processor. See how it goes.

Does your PC have an AIO CPU liquid cooler?

BlizzardOC MB specs reflect HP factory BIOS support for the 13900K and 14900K processors.

You'll have to talk to HP concerning Intel: 13th Gen and 14th Gen extended warranty support.

Thanks Bill_To for your reply!

Yes, I hate to play around with the BIOS if I can help it, but F.55 (or something) does not let my Omen POST with the 13900k or 14900k.

On the GT21-0024 software/ drivers page here only F.80 and F.81 explicitly say that they "add support for 13th/ 14th gen..." Of course since F.81 was rolled out in March 2024, F.52 through F.55 have been rolled out from May'24 - May'25, but "fixes and enhancements" notes don't say anything about 13th/ 14th gen. Logic would suggest they would, but the numbering convention HP used from going from F.5x to F.8x and then back to F.5x is a bit confounding.

The BlizzardOC was released before the 13th & 14th gen intel processors, so HP's factory BIOS support would have happened only *after* those CPUs launched.

Yes, my system has a AIO CPU liquid cooler.
Will try a factory reset in the F.55 BIOS, and see if it does anything, and will report back if my 13900k POSTs

Greetings @rm2d2

My pleasure.

Can you provide a link to the HP site having the F.8x BIOS downloads?

This HP Site lists four BIOS updates and other drivers.

One BIOS update is for your PC 's MB, 8917.

Three BIOS updates are for the 8918 MB, which is the (Blizzard MB).

The Blizzard MB SSID  (8918) does not support Intel "K' processors.

HP is using, at least, two different MBs in the GT21-0000i product series.

I'm thinking the F.8x BIOS updates might be for a HP MB having a different MB SSID.

HP does some unusual stuff on some HP PCs. I could not find a specific driver download site using your PC's product number, GT21-0024. That's why I linked to a HP download site having a generic product number of GT21-0000i.

On the same link you mentioned in your message, if you click on older versions of the BIOS, you'll find prior versions for the 8917 mobo.

The F.8x versions are indeed for the 8917.

Thanks again for partaking in this discussion in trying to get to the solution. No update from HP 😞

Greetings @rm2d2

My pleasure.

I'm looking at the 8918 MB download site Here. And then checking the 8917 MB Here.

Both sites list the F.80 and F.81 BIOS versions in the Revision history.

I stumped.

I still don't understand why the 8917 MB does not ID the "K" processors.

Like I've said, HP will sometimes throw curve balls.

Per HP, F.80 and F.81 are older than F.46 and F.55. This makes no sense whatsoever?????

And BIOS updates are usually cumulative. So if F.80 or if F.81 support Intel "K' CPUs then F.55 should also support the "K" CPUs.

Very confusing!
