Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ive been upgrading my old Omen 870-224 recently and would like to know if i need to update my BIOS before installing a i7-7700 cpu. The mobo is Odense2-k SSID: 82f1. Im upgrading from an i5-7400 and from looking at the specs page i know the i7-7700 is compatible but cant find any information on if I need a certain BIOS version or if the cpu is compatible out of the box.

My current BIOS version is AMI F.10  (which is quite old from 3/30/2017)

I looked through the ROM family 82f1 BIOS update history on the hp website but didnt see any updates that 'add' support for the i7-7700 so will BIOS version AMI F.10 be sufficient for the new cpu? I really dont want to put the cpu in to find out the pc doesnt boot. TYIA!

@Astachura11,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Updated drivers for your OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-224 (Z5M58AA) as fitted with the HP Odense2-K motherboard (SSID: 82F1), can be found here: OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-224 Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support:

And your Omen 870-224 can also be fitted with a faster processor as well, an i7-7700K as the specs for this motherboard indirectly indicated as well: "TDP: Up to 91 W", and confirmed here, for example: HP 870-224 Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the response. I actually bought a i7-7700k bc UserBenchmark said its compatible but after doing more research ive found conflicting information. Technically it should work since the mobo supports up to 91w tdp. And I know the H170 chipset doesnt support overclocking which is fine but I've heard HP would have to allow the K version support through a BIOS update. Not sure how accurate that is but I'd love to be able to just use the 7700k over having to buy another used old cpu.

I put the i7-7700k in with a new Noctua cooler the other day and the pc wouldnt boot. (Couldve been from new psu or gpu not all the way in) I figured I would have to buy a 7700 instead. So i assume my best chance of the 7700k working would be update my pcs BIOS to the latest version and try again? Would love to hear opinions of others who tried but unfortunately probably not many people in my position with still using an old pc lol

@Astachura11,

The i7-7700K is fully compatible and should work just fine.  As shown in my previous message, make sure you got the latest F.45 "20190524" BIOS upgrade:
