Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I upgraded the power supply and installed a GTX 1060 3GB video card into my friends computer.  When I turned the computer on it wasn't displaying anything, but eventually a blank Win10 desktop screen came up.  I checked device manager and it shows both graphics adapters, the one I added in and the onboard video.  The onboard video had the primary Win10 desktop icons (I plugged into the VGA port to see that).

Went into the BIOS and disabled the onboard video, but it turned it right back on again.

Disabled the onboard video in device manager, but Win10 is still treating this as a dual monitor setup.  I disabled the the onboard video desktop screen and put everything on the add-on card desktop screen but it's still affecting gaming, which is the reason we installed the new video card.  It wants to run at the speed of the onboard video.

I checked this link and everything is set like this.  This wasn't my problem though, as the system booted up just fine.

Installed the latest BIOS, V80.21 to no affect.

I tried 3 other video cards too, a ATI 6450, GTX 650 and a GTX 660Ti, and they all did the exact same thing.  Onboard video will not disable by the BIOS, and Win10 sees both graphics adapters.

Anyone else run into this?  This is totally bizarre to me, normally when you plug in an add-on video card the BIOS disabled the onboard video. I've done plenty of these upgrades, this is a first!

Hi:

I wouldn't be able to help you with why the onboard video is not disabled, but I did want to show you the link to the motherboard specs which indicate that the onboard video is not available when an add-on video card is installed.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03924124

Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 (GT2)

*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.

Integrated graphics are supported by the installed processor

One PCI Express x16 slot (Gen 3.0)

So, I would have to conclude that there is something wrong with the motherboard.

It probably is a motherboard problem at some level, or maybe just a bug in the BIOS.  As stated the add-on video card does work once it reaches windoze, so the slot itself is ok.

Figured out what went wrong though.  They had plugged into the VGA too and Win10 detected that and was using it as well.  Did a restart and then quickly unplugged the VGA connection and only had the DVI connection on the video card.  That brought back all of the settings I did earlier and it now worked at the expected FPS in the games.

Only problem is if ever need to get into the BIOS settings will have to hook up the VGA connection.
