BeemerBiker,  it's interesting that you mention this, as I use a Compaq Elite 8300 SFF hardware in an 8200 SFF case. Apparently the computer case is identical. The problem started a long time ago and there is a certain probability that the problem started around the time I moved the motherboard from one case to the other. But because it's the same line of HP products, I never considered that.
However, the strange thing about this situation is that the PSU starts by itself (without running the POST) even when all cables of the case are also disconnected. Only PSU and motherboard connected to power.

Have you checked the BIOS log for unusual errors?  

I am showing Thermistor error but the motherboard (cupertino2) does not have the chips and there are holes where the pins for the thermistor would be soldered. 

 

There might be come clue there for your strange problem.
