I want to add an internal optical drive to my new M01-F3214 desktop and I don't know what to get. Years ago I assembled desktop computers for my own use, but things have changed so much since then that I'm somewhat lost.
(1) Does it have to be made specifically to fit this model or are they generic?
(2) What is the correct name for what I'm looking for? Slimline? Size? ???
(3) Recommended makes/models and sources?
Any knowledgeable/accurate assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to our HP community forum!
Your new HP Desktop M01-F3214 PC is sold specifically without an optical drive:
I would recommend buying an external optical drive, such as this purchase option.

Here are two specifics you asked for: this 'slim-sized' optical drive which is compatible with your HP Desktop PC M01-F3000a, with p/n: 853885-800 "DVD - GNRC, ODD DVDSM 9.5 Slim Tray RAZR", for sale via eBay, but that is without the bezel. The bezel's p/n: L67795-001 "Bezel - ASSY, ODD-BEZEL-ID19-MT-OPP" but is not available for sale as far as I can see.
Do you mind giving this your two-cent's thoughts -you dealt with this -or at least a similar system before: Solved: Internal Optical Drive for HP Slim Desktop S01-pF2145xt - HP Support Community - 8510593.

I recommend the external ODD as suggested by @NonSequitur777
There is a possible solution here but I do not recommend for the following reasons
Vertical ODD tend to get the CD stuck if the CD slides off the holder or tips slightly. The case needs to be set horizontal to remove the stuck CD. The slot type are worse required disassembly as there is no eject button unlike the tray type.
Only the full size CD's work in vertical mounts. Hardly any software is released on ODD anymore as it is easier to control and update online.
The only remaining rental is Redbox, most are Blu-ray and required special software from Dvdfab to make a copy, and Blu-ray are not OEM for any computer system that I know of.
The power/data connector for tray or slot required an adapter "13 to 22" and even the 22 pins side may need an adapter in addition to the data cable.. The bevel may not match the case color. The ODD's region code may not be for the country you are in and it may be difficult finding the app to change the region code.
Your case very likely has no mounting bracket requiring a DIY approach.
