A few weeks ago the HP Assistant notified me to update the bios:
"HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 8245)"
I performed the update. All seems well.
The other day the Assistant notified me to update the bios again, this time:
"HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 8381)"
I don't know one "ROM Family" from another but …
During the update a message stated the currently install bios is more up to date than the one trying to install so I cancelled the second update. Okay, but today I again got the same notification to update. There appears to be no way to tell the Assistant to stop telling me to install an OLDER version of my bios. Unlike the Assistant's "messages" there is no trash can in the update list.
So, how do I stop this erroneous update notification?

Uninstall HP Assistant. Reinstall once a quarter or so, have it check your system and then uninstall.
Besides the issue you documented, it is yet another program + assorted bloatware running in the background that's adding up slowing down your computer.

Thank you NonSequitur777 for taking the time to respond. Greatly appreciated. Uninstalling and periodically reinstalling may be the only way to clear the "update" notice regarding the old bios but then I could possibly miss other important messages. (Assuming HP sends important messages!) I got a message a few months ago that my computer would not be supported any longer due to its age. I was surprised when I saw the update message. If it is no longer supported why am I getting updates? I never found the "assistant" to be very helpful so I am going to follow your advice and simply uninstall.

You're quite welcome, thank you for your kind words.
It's debatable how essential HP Assistant is. Anyway, suffice to say that you don't need to have it running in the background on a daily basis. As long as you regularly check for Windows updates, have a decent (paid -not "free" version) antivirus program running in the background such as Webroot or Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, you should be fine. Come to think of it, once a quarter or so install and run the "Intel Driver & Support Assistant" (download from here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html), and after it has done its thing, uninstall.
Hope this helps.
