HP Pavilion 690 Gaming Desktop Computer 690-0024

Every time that I update this computer it happens to factory reset and delete all my apps, files, and PC settings. I tried to get all my files back in recovery but it was as if it wiped my computer clean. I now have an update that I have been delaying for a month and change, because I have a video that I have been trying to get off, but haven't gotten enough time to get a hard drive or an SD card to off load it. its almost the 19th and I still don't know what's wrong with it. you all (developers) will probably reply after I need this info, but someone please help because I have a client where her stuff will be gone unless that stops.

Hi @Tie_Man

Welcome to the HP Forum.

That's really strange.

I have never seen anything like this in 31 years of computing or, at least, since Microsoft started monthly updates to Windows.

A Windows Update (is this happening with any Windows update?) resets the PC back to factory condition. And all data on the system drive is lost.

I would backup data stored on the system drive ASAP.

Add a second drive (internal or external) . Store data on the second drive.

Also for some reason, the Microsoft applications are completely disabled for whatever reason, photo veiwer, mail, movies and video, the store itself, etc. why does that happen?

Thanks for responding, @Bill_To

yes this is a windows situation.

If you haven't seen this before, how in the world can I counter/stop this?

I have taken precautions to save the data, such as OneDrive, google drive, and emailing it to an alt email.

If this an unknown problem, then is it something like the internal code, or do I need to get it taken apart???

Help. Me.

Hi @Tie_Man

My pleasure.

I wish I could help but it almost sounds as if the PC is infected with malware in the UEFI firmware in the BIOS.

Try the latest BIOS update for this PC's MB  at this HP Site.

This problem may not be fixable.

The PC may have to be replaced if you can't fix the problem.

Hi @Tie_Man

The system drive and any other drive connected to the PC would be reinfected every time you try to do a Windows Update if the BIOS is infected.

The only remedy is to replace the PC if the BIOS update does not clean the possible malware located in the BIOS firmware.

Hi @Tie_Man

You might try the Bleeping Computer Forum.

They specialize in malware removal.

Hi @Tie_Man

One final thought.

The malware could be hiding on the system drive if the problem recurs after every Windows update.

The malware could be intercepting the update, clearing all data off the drive, and making it appear as if the updates were installed while continuing to corrupt Microsoft apps.

Malware is very sneaky.
