I am trying to upgrade my 4060ti in my HP OMEN 40L to an RTX 5070. However, when trying to turn on the pc it never boots/posts.

The bios IS up to date, I upgraded the PSU to 850w months ago, and everything else is up to date. I first wiped the graphics drivers before installing the new GPU but nothing. Then I took out the CMOS battery for a few minutes and still nothing.

Am I doing something wrong? Is the RTX 5070 just not compatible with the HP OMEN 40L?

Ryzen 7 7700, 32gb DDR5, 850w PSU.

@Ghosty7,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

My friend, your RTX 5070 should be compatible with the HP OMEN 40L, given your specs (Ryzen 7 7700, 32GB DDR5, 850-watt PSU). However, since your system is failing to boot or post, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:

1. Ensure Proper Power Connection:

  • If your PSU is modular, make sure you're using separate PCIe power cables from different power rails instead of daisy-chaining a single cable. The RTX 5070 can draw significant power, and using separate rails ensures stable delivery.

2. Verify GPU Installation:

  • Reseat the GPU and ensure it is firmly "snapped" in the PCIe x16 slot.

  • Check that all power connectors are properly secured.

  • If possible, test the card in another system to confirm it's not a DOA (dead on arrival) unit.

3. Check for BIOS Compatibility Issues:

  • Even though you've updated the BIOS, HP firmware sometimes lags in supporting new GPUs.

  • Try disabling Secure Boot and enabling CSM (Compatibility Support Module) in the BIOS (if available). Some OEM systems struggle with UEFI-only cards.

4. Confirm RTX 50xx Series Support on OMEN 40L:

So far, there are no UserBenchmark results for HP OMEN 40L GT21-1xxx desktops running an RTX 50xx card (UserBenchmark link). This could mean the RTX 50xx series has limited or unverified support on this system. If no OMEN 40L users have successfully run a 50xx card yet, this would strongly suggest a firmware-related issue.

5. Test with Your Old GPU:

  • Try reinstalling your RTX 4060 Ti to confirm the system still boots properly. If the 4060 Ti works but the 5070 doesn’t, it’s more likely a compatibility issue rather than a hardware failure.

6. Consider PSU Behavior:

  • Even though you upgraded to an 850-watt PSU, some HP OMEN systems have had power delivery quirks. If your PSU isn’t ATX 3.0 certified, transient power spikes from the 5070 might be causing boot issues.

  • If possible, test with a known high-quality PSU that meets ATX 3.0 standards.

Next Steps:

If none of these steps work, HP might need to release a BIOS update to properly support the RTX 50xx series. You could also contact HP Support to check if they officially support the RTX 5070 in your specific OMEN 40L model.

Please, let us know how it goes!

Kind Regards,
