HP Pavilion Gaming - TG01-1209

Hi,

I would like to replace my current 2x8 GB RAM DDR4-2933 MHz (no other information in specs) by 2x16 GB DDR4.

I found several 2x16 GB kits on Amazon, but mostly 3200MHz or 3600 Mhz (Corsair, Crucial).

Corsair Vengeance  LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200 (PC4-25600) C16 looks like a good choice, but I wonder if their heatspreader could block the installation of the RAM.

I am aware that I could not have more speed than 2933 MHz. Are 3200 MHz and 3600 MHz RAMs compatible with my desktop? I just don't want them to make any damage to my computer.

Thanks

Miki

@Mikija,

Welcome to our Community forum!

Your HP Pavilion Gaming - TG01-1209 is either fitted with the Baker (Intel) motherboard (SSID: 8767) or the Erica3 (AMD) motherboard (SSID: 87D6).

Interestingly, looking here at actual HP System Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-1xxx Users, the fastest RAM speed any RAM can run on a Baker motherboard is 2933 MHz, whereas RAM fitted in an Erica3 motherboard can run up to 3200 MHz.

Not all RAM is created equal in the HP Pavilion Reservation.

These are the among the very best RAM options:

Crucial CT16G4DFRA32A.M16FR 2x16GB

Crucial CT32G4DFD832A.M16FF 2x32GB

Kingston HyperX KHX3200C18D4/16G 2x16GB

Hynix HMA82GU6CJR8N-XN 2x16GB

Yes, non-XMP 3200 MHz RAM is definitely compatible. Depending on what motherboard you got, it may down-throttle aka 'bridge' to 2933 MHz. The 3600 MHz RAM may be compatible, but if you happen to install, say, Corsair Vengeance 3600 MHz RAM, this RAM will get stuck at its "SPD" (default) RAM speed of 2133 MHz.

Your PC does not provide XMP access.

Anyway, I would 'stick' with the non-XMP RAM options that according to the Userbenchmark site shows the best Performance.

Kind Regards,

Hi @NonSequitur77,

Thank you very much for your detailed response. It helps a lot.

I am not a gamer, I just compose the music for myself but had trouble with multiple plugins and with bigger RAM, everything should be smoother.

You were right concerning the motherboard. As I have Intel, it is probably Baker.

The bell rang when I saw the name Hynix. I think this is the RAM  that I have (2x8). Not impressive.

I was looking for Corsair because I have several of their products, but I was afraid how they would work. You gave me a clean solution.

Crucial CT16G4DFRA32A.M16FR works on 3200 MHz (I know, it will be downclocked to 2933 in my case), but in spite of relatively high CAS latency (CL22) this should be faster than my current RAM.

For your reference, their kit of 2x16 GB CT16G4DFRA32A.M16FR is called  CT2K16G4DFRA32A .M16FR.

Thanks again,

mikija

Hi @NonSequitur777,

I ordered, received and installed Crucial CT2K16G4DFRA32A. A few minutes job. The most difficult was the removal of all the HP thingy inside which block the access to RAM. LOL

So far, everything is working fine and I noticed that a lot of apps work faster or much faster than before.

Thanks again,
