I have an HP AIO that lost power during a BIOS update..
Now I get error message at boot:
THE SYSTEM BIOS UPDATE FAILED
UNABLE TO OPEN BIOS UPDATE FILE
There are not BIOS updates for my specific AIO, but I did find a BIOS that I put on a formatted thumbdrive:
sp144795.exe
But it didn't work.. I also can't boot at all with a HIRENS thumbdrive.. Which is logical because the AIO doesn't have a BIOS to tell it to boot from a thumbdrive..
Do I have a brick'ed AIO???
Any help would be most appreciated...

Hi, @michale32086
It appears that any HP AIO PC with a MonkD motherboard such as yours has, the latest BIOS update fails.
There has to be 30 - 40 posts about this problem in the last two weeks.
The only suggestion I can offer would be to read through this discussion and hope you can get your PC back up and running again.

There is supplemental information below.
HP Desktop PCs - Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) | HP® Customer Support
Last section. There is a video at the very bottom of the page that describes how to do this on a notebook PC, and since it is included under the desktop link, perhaps it works the same way.
Install the BIOS recovery file
Restoring the BIOS with a Recovery Flash Drive on HP Notebooks
The easiest thing to try first would be to follow the instructions that show up after the USB recovery drive has been successfully created.
1. Power off the device to be recovered.
2.Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.
3. Power on the device.
4. The device may reboot up to 3 times with indicator lights on the keyboard flashing, or the screen appearing blank for short time.

This is most unfortunate.
Here are a couple of steps you can try to recover from the situation: 🤞
Clear CMOS:
- Turn off the computer and unplug it from the wall.
- Open the computer case.
- Look for the clear CMOS jumper or button on the motherboard. If you can't find it, look for the CMOS battery (a coin-cell battery) and remove it.
- If using the jumper, switch its position for about 10 seconds and then switch it back to the original position.
- If using the battery method, leave it out for about 5 minutes, then reinsert it.
- Plug the computer back in and try booting it up.
BIOS Recovery:
Recover the BIOS using a key press combination.
Turn off the computer. Press and hold the Windows + b keys, and continue to press those keys while you press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds. Release the power button, but continue pressing the Windows + b keys.
The power light remains on, and the screen remains blank for about 40 seconds before anything is displayed. You might hear a series of beeps (usually 8 beeps). Eventually, an HP BIOS Update screen is displayed and the BIOS update begins automatically.
NOTE: If the HP BIOS Update screen is not displayed, press and release the power button, and then immediately press the Windows + b keys at the same time, repeatedly, until the computer beeps or opens the HP BIOS Update screen.
After the BIOS is recovered, a Continue Startup button is displayed and a timer counts down. Click the Continue Startup button to restart the computer immediately, or wait for the computer to restart automatically when the timer reaches zero.
If issue still persist then run diagnostics to rule out other hard drive issues
- Start or restart the computer.
- Press F2 repeatedly during start up to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI utility.
- Select Component Tests > Hard Drive > Quick Test.
- Click Run Once.
Once the test completes, results are displayed on the screen.
If the drive passes all tests, continue to restore a computer back to the factory default, which will isolate whether it’s a software or hardware issue.
The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.
Click here for the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10) link.
Consider Professional Repair or Replacement:
- If all else fails, if your AIO is still under warranty, you may need to send your motherboard or computer in for repair, or -more likely, consider purchasing a replacement motherboard via eBay if available.

You're very welcome.
Glad that info worked for you.
Would it be possible for you to let us know exactly what process you used to restore the BIOS after you made the recovery drive?
Was it the last set of info (The 4 steps) I posted, or did you use one of the other ways to do it?
Your input will help us to focus on the actual solution without the need to provide superfluous information.
Thanks.

I'm in this same situation. I haven't been able to execute/boot from bios recovery flash drive in affected computer. It's that same Monk motherboard and bios file. So how were you able to continue update? and thanks for any info you provide.
