Power Supply

I have an old HP Envy h8-1414 PC , 1 TB 10 MB RAM which is running noisy at times, I bought in 2011 or 2012 . Have to wiggle the power cord if I shut it(have been using sleep mode instead) the power supply is frequently makes a whining sounds which sounds like a fan,  like an old car trying to crank over. I took the cover off and see I need to replace HP Model FH-XD301MYR-1 Part Number 667893-001 300W Power Supply. Seems to be impossible to find a new HP part, and HP parts chat unable to help me. Went to look at new models and they are barely more than what I have and not expandable. So disappointed they are so light and really feel like they have nothing inside. I really need help because I want to save this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That would be a linear replacement, so to speak.  Since your motherboard happens to be 24-pin ATX-power enabled, you could replace your power supply with an industry standard ATX power supply, as long as you watch its dimensions (LxWxH) for fit inside your desktop:

Addendum: In the off-chance you are interested in upgrading your legacy desktop, you likely got an AMD FX-6120 (6-Cores, 6-Threads, 3.60 GHz to max 4.20 GHz, 95-watt TDP) processor installed (please verify).  According to: UserBenchmark: HP h8-1414 Compatible Components, you could upgrade your processor to an AMD FX-8350 (8-Cores, 8-Threads, 4.00 GHz to max 4.20 GHz, 125-watt TDP)*, which would provide a substantial boost to your desktop's performance: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-FX-6120-Six-Core-vs-AMD-FX-8350/m7026vs1489. Please also verify your motherboard's SSID ("BaseBoard Product") number: Gigabyte 2AC8.  You do this by typing in: system information in your Windows search bar, and clicking on the System Information App.  You should see something like this:

Thank you so much, for all your help and for the quick response!!! I am not sure I would replace the processor or even begin to know how!!!  I went out today to replace my desktop and to my disappointment all the HP Envys ( and others) that I looked at were not much better than mine, outside of the fact that I do not have Intel processor and really didn't miss it.

I have to buy something new but would like to wait, if I can until Black Friday but really would like something that will last and can be upgraded.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! I cannot believe how things have changed in the last 12 years. I am handy, can change a hard drive, add memory, can hopefully change the power supply but do not think I could build one on my own. 

I will try to find a power supply to replace this one to hold me over with the recommendations you gave me, very appreciated!!!  I do see that many complain that they buy the ones listed on Amazon that match my part number and model and do not have the cable for DVD. Not that I use it so much but would like to hook it up.

Thank you for your advice!!! I use the internet the most through google chrome and Microsoft office, word and powerpoint the most. I would like to spend under $1000.  I would love to wait till black friday or cyber Monday to get a good deal.

I really do not. I was looking at Costco because they give a 90 return policy and a 2 year warranty. 

I do have another question maybe you would be able to answer. Do you know how I can save my entire internal hard drive to an external device? Any suggestions on which external hard drives would be best? Too much date for last 11 years that I would like to keep.

Costco indeed offers some incredible deals, such as this example: HP Pavilion Desktop - AMD Ryzen 5 5600G - Windows 11 | Costco.  Mind you: the $200 HP manufacturer's savings is valid 10/23/23 through 11/16/23. While supplies last.

If your HP Envy h8-1414 Desktop PC is running Windows 8 (if not, please let me know), in order to save your entire internal hard drive to an external device, you can use the built-in Windows 8 backup and recovery options. Here's how you can do it:

Using Windows 8 Backup and Restore:

1. Connect an External Drive: Plug in your external storage device (e.g., an external hard drive or USB drive) with enough storage space to accommodate the backup.

2. Open File History:

   • Go to the Start screen and type "File History."
   • Click on "File History" in the search results.

3. Set Up Backup:

   • In the File History window, click on "System Image Backup" on the bottom-left.

4. Choose a Backup Location:

   • Select your external drive as the backup location.

5. Start the Backup:

   • Click "Next" and follow the prompts to set up the backup.
   • Ensure that you select the option to include a system image when prompted.

6. Confirm Backup: Review the settings and click "Start Backup" to begin the process. This will back up your entire system, including your Windows 8 installation and personal files.

7. Wait for the Backup: The backup process may take some time, depending on the size of your data. Make sure your computer is plugged into a power source if it's a desktop.
