Hi,
I am looking into upgrading my HP ENVY Desktop TE01 - 3021. I hope to add a graphics (video) card with 16 GB of VRAM. On investigating, I find that the power supply in not powerful enough. The existing power supply looks like 400 watts is the maximum and such a card might use up to 800 watts. As such, I am looking at upgrade the power supply to about 700 to 800 watts. This brings up the following issues.
1. Can a generic (non HP) power supply fit in? It looks like there would be enough space. If an official HP power supply is available and can fit, what is it and what is the cost.
2. Would it be advisable to put in an even more powerful power supply. I already have put in a 512 GB. solid state drive and at a later date might upgrade the system RAM from 16 GB to 32 GB.
Best wishes,
Bill Stanley

L05757-800: here you go: HP L05757-800 for sale | eBay
If you are determined to power a 16GB graphics card, the following GPU examples (TDP: 165 watt, one 8-pin PCIe power cable) would be compatible with a 500-watt power supply:
1.) ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4060 Ti OC Edition 16GB
2.) Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Windforce OC 16GB
3.) PNY GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB
The aforementioned examples would be the very limit I would recommend with this HP-quality 500-watt power supply. You really don't want to exceed the 500-watt power limit, as it would cause your system to crash, and/or your graphics performance to underperform.

You are correct: an HP ENVY Desktop TE01 - 3021 is powered with a 400-watt power supply with p/n: L69242-800 and is fitted with the Reno motherboard (SSID: 89B5).
Unfortunately, given HP's proprietary power supply approach, the most powerful power supply compatible with your motherboard is only 500 watt, with p/n: L05757-800.
However, what you could do, is using an "ATX PSU ADAPTER 24-Pin to 15-pin SATA Power Supply Adapter", such as the one shown here [EDIT]: Amazon.com: Jaquiain Power Board Dual PSU Multiple Power Supply Adapter Add2Psu with Sata ATX 24Pin ..., which will enable you to sync an external ATX power supply (your 400-watt power supply will stay where it is) just to power your high(er)-end graphics card, like what I did in my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 (and later G4/G5) SFF upgrade projects: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Upgrading-HP-Elite....
Looking here: UserBenchmark: HP ENVY TE01-3xxx Compatible Components, it doesn't look like any HP Envy TE01-3xxx Users have applied this synced power supply approach: all GPUs that I can see don't require anything more than the aforementioned 500-watt power supply.
Imagine: you could be the first to blow everybody else out of the water, say with an RTX 3080 powered with a 600+ watt ATX power supply.
Anyway, I hope this was helpful.

Like I said, there aren't any more powerful proprietary HP power supplies than the 500-watt PSU I already mentioned.
Even more complicated would be to design a compatible power supply as a DIY project.

Hi,
It seems that I will have to go with your suggestion of the 500 watt power supply unit. I have a bit of trouble finding that item. Is it possible that you might be able to provide a link to that 500 watt power supply unit?
I will have to lower my sights a bit to make sure that the video card does not draw too much power. What might happen if the 500 watt limit is exceeded somewhat?
Best wishes,

Hi,
Thank you for all the advice. The PSU that came with the computer does seem to be on the weak side for my needs. I'll go with the L05757-800.
It seems that I overestimated the power requirements of many of the video cards. Probably I will not need 16 GB and 12 GB would be more than enough.
Once again, thank you!
Best wishes

An HP ENVY Desktop TE01-3021 is not compatible with industry standard ATX power supplies, only proprietary HP power supplies.
Please don't confuse the issue.
