HP ProDesk 600 G5 Small Form Factor PC RCTO Base Model

Hi forum!
I just bought a HP ProDesk G5 SFF for a reasonable amount of money but lacking performance on the CPU side.

I would like to upgrade the CPU and checked the official service manual and its support the i5 9600, 9500 or the 9400 (F & regular variant) .

I thought about installing a i5 9400T as the TDP is lower as the intended use is homelab / 24h service.

My questions

- does it work or is there any CPU whitelist / microcode in BIOS neglecting those CPU

- if yes - does it support the TDP down functionality as non of the listed CPUs in service manual is a T variant

Thank you for your support, I just checked some other threads regarding CPU upgrades on other generation where the forum had been very helpful.

@dht16,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, all 9th gen "T" variant processors will work just fine in your HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF, and as you mentioned, will run significantly cooler because of their lower TDP.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for your help; I just received the CPU and changed the unit to an i5 9400T and it runs smoothly.

But actually don't know if TDP-down state is enabled.

Greetings,

as you mentioned, the 9th gen ‘T’ variant processors will work, does it include the Pentium Gold?

And because it support 8th gen too, does it work if I use the 8th gen Pentium Gold ‘T’ variantprocessors.

 Thanks for reply.

greetings,

I can't comment on the 8th gen, but all stated CPUs in the HP Service Manual für the Prodesk 600 G5 SFF are 9th gen.

You can the product installed with 8th gen CPUs, but I dont' know anything abouth possible different hardware and bios revisions.

Maybe others can tell you more about this issue.

@Taiwan-no1,

Yes, all Pentium GOLD "T" variants such as the Pentium Gold 5500T and the Pentium Gold 5600T are also compatiblehttps://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5/i5-9400T.html.

That is wonderful, thanks for sharing the info.

I now have an i5-9400, but its TDP is a bit higher than the Pentium Gold T CPU.

I am building a home server with i5-9400, but I was concerned about idle power consumption.

Perhaps switching to i3-9100t or G5420t in the future, even others with lower TDPwill be a good choice.
