My daughter has the Obelisk 875-0014 with the i7-8700 processor. it's a 65W and fits into the LGA1151 socket.

My question is will this processor work wither her motherboard?

@pdayton13,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Your daughter's OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0014 (4NM65AA), according to: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/omen-by-hp-obelisk-desktop-pc-875-0000/23302709/model/23574497/... and: HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Edoras | HP® Customer Support, is fitted with an HP Edoras motherboard (SSID: 84FD), with chipset H370.

The short answer to your question is: unfortunately, an i9-9900 processor is not compatible with your PC, perhaps best illustrated here: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7/i7-8700.html, and here: CPU-Upgrade: Intel H370 chipset processor support.

I thought it might be. She does Twitch streaming of Minecraft and is having significant issues with performance with the i7.  She constantly sees her CPU getting hammered. She originally thought it was her GPU but performance metrics indicate otherwise. So her thought is upgrade the CPU.  Doe that make sense or would adding something like Intel Optian se more of in improvement?

I'm an old school IT guy that never got into gaming so I am very new to all of this processor, performance stuff.

Also if the current i7 cpu is 65W does that mean an upgrade has to be 65W also or can a 95w processor be used without upgrading her power supply?

reread my previous answer, me from what I read, it is indicated compatible

that said, I find it curious that it does not work with the i7 processor...
Now, I looked at some identical models, and did not find confirmation of this processor installed, and I had answered here without news

I understand it's compatible, thank you for that.  My followup question was is an i7 with something like Optain better for performance then upgrading to the i9

@pdayton13,

My apologies: I was mistaken, the initial source I looked at, omitted the i9-9900:

[EDIT:] Having done more thorough research -something I should have conducted in the first place for you, here is some additional information relevant to your initial question: getting the absolute best processor. You see, your Edoras motherboard (SSID: 84FD), even though the manual appears to restrict processor upgrades to "TDP: up to 65 W", is actually also compatible with the "K" (with integrated graphics) and "KF" (without integrated graphics) TDP=95 watt 8th and 9th gen Intel processor versions.

Actual OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0014 (SSID: 84FD) User examples:

Intel Core i9-9900K: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/46166679.

Intel Core i7-9700KF: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/54646998.

Please Note: because 95-watt processors generate more heat, you most likely will have to improve CPU cooling airflow, which would mean either installing an upgraded CPU heatsink/cooling fan assembly, and/or adding an additional case cooling fan.

However, this is doable, as I have shown a number of times, such as in this HP legacy desktop upgrade project: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-EliteDesk-800-G5-S..., where I also happened to install an i7-9700KF processor with outstanding results: HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF Performance Results - UserBenchmark.
