What is the function of the slot on the front of my PC desktop

I found out that the slot is for inserting a SD memory card where I can store my backups.  So I ordered a SanDisk 128 GB SDHC card.  I stumbled on the answer while looking at various similar questions.  It's a pity that HP does not tell the purchaser what the various slots/openings are for on the desktop PC.  Us novices need to have it spelled out.  I have the same kind of slot on my HP laptop that I now know how to utilize, through no thanks to HP.
