Hello,

I have an old HP PAVILION 590-P0057C | INTEL CORE I5-8400 2.8GHZ  that I would like to upgrade the power supply to something higher than the 180W that it came with to add a Graphics card to this old HP computer. 

Will the HP 400W Power Supply Unit (L04618-800) work with this old computer?

Yes, the L04618-800 HP PSU is compatible with the 590 case and MB.

Some folks have upgraded to the HP 500 watt PSU in the 590 case. Part number L05757-800.

The folks in this Forum doing this PSU upgrade indicated the HP 500 watt PSU does fit in the case. I can't verify this.

Both parts should be available at eBay. Find a reputable seller having a 100% return/refund policy.

One pitfall using the HP 500 watt PSU: it is not possible to use all case/PSU mounts points to secure the PSU to the chassis.

I don't think I would do the 500 watt HP PSU but it is an option if you can live with the PSU mounting limitation.

Be aware the 590 chassis is also limited to a dual slot graphics card at around 9.5 inches.

And the latest Nvidia (5000 series) and AMD (9000 series) cards may not be detected by your PC's BIOS.

A PCIe gen 3 graphics card would be the best bet. Maybe a PCIe Gen 4 card??
