I have an HP Pavilion 500-314, and I see there's an old closed thread on the question of what RAM works in it. The machine seems to be a real orphan since even Crucial doesn't list it. It has worked very well since I bought it around a decade ago; it's still fast enough for anything I do on it. Anyway, I ran sudo dmidecode -t memory to identify the 8GB RAM that came with it, in slot 4, and it says Samsung M378B1G73DB0-CK0 1600MT/s DDR3 DIMM. So I found that exact DIMM on Amazon for around $24 shipped. I first installed it in slot 2, and the machine would pass POST, but during Linux Mint boot, it would lock up at various places in the boot sequence. I moved it to slot 3, and I had to reboot 2 or 3 times to get it to come all the way to life. It seems to run stable since. So I hope this helps anybody who's still looking for an answer 🙂

Hello ktatlow1,

Thank you for your query,

Thank you for the post, its realy helpfull for other user who want to upgrade, please find some addtional information:

For your HP Pavilion 500-314, adding RAM can be a great way to improve its performance without needing to replace it entirely. Based on the information you've gathered, your system uses DDR3 memory, and it's running at 1600MT/s. The current RAM module in your system is a Samsung M378B1G73DB0-CK0, which is indeed a DDR3 DIMM with those specifications.

Here are some points to consider when purchasing additional RAM for your machine:

Compatibility

  • Same Specifications: It's ideal to add a DIMM with the exact same specifications as the existing one for compatibility and optimal performance, which seems to be what you've found.
  • Number of Slots: Ensure your motherboard has an available slot for the additional RAM. According to the HP Pavilion 500-314 specifications, it typically has four DIMM slots available, so there should be room for an additional module if they aren't fully occupied.

Installation Tips

  1. Power Down and Unplug: Before installing the new RAM, ensure your computer is turned off and unplugged from the power source.
  2. Anti-static Precaution: Touch a metal part of the case to discharge any static electricity from your body before touching the RAM or the motherboard.
  3. Install the DIMM: Open the side panel of your computer’s case, locate the RAM slots, and carefully insert the new DIMM until it clicks securely into place.

Post-Installation

  • Verify Installation: After installing the new RAM, power on the system and check the BIOS or use software tools to ensure that the system recognizes the additional memory.

Purchasing

  • Reputable Sellers: When buying parts online, make sure the seller is reputable to avoid counterfeit products.
  • Return Policy: Check the return policy in case there are any issues with compatibility or functionality after purchasing.

With these considerations, purchasing the Samsung M378B1G73DB0-CK0 RAM you've identified should work well for your HP Pavilion 500-314 and extend its usefulness.
