I am looking to upgrade the RAM on my PC. It came with 8GB and that is what it currently has. I would like to upgrade to 16GB but am getting bogged down by all the different variations and am not sure what is suitable. My current RAM is 8Gb 1RX8 PC4-2666V-UA2-11 but I worry about compatibility if I just buy another 8Gb stick. What do you advise?

Also what advice can you give on installing? (two sticks in ports 1 and 3 or 2 and 4}? Would I need to go into BIOS to add the new RAM or does the computer take care of the upgrade without my intervention? So many questions, your help will be invaluable.

@Lestalad,

According to the specs, your HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0007na (4FQ76EA) with the Berks motherboard (SSID: 844C) is fitted with an i7-8700, and the fastest RAM this processor allows is 2666 MHz.

Looking at RAM performance in this Userbenchmark link, I would match the 8GB RAM stick you have with one of the following 8GB RAM sticks:

Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CTD

Samsung M378A1K43DB2-CTD

Hynix HMA81GU6CJR8N-VK

Micron 8ATF1G64AZ-2G6E1

The best chance to run 8GB RAM sticks in dual channel mode -as far as I am able to ascertain, is to use the two black RAM slots for your 8GB RAM sticks.

Kind Regards,

Thank you NonSequitur for your help which has been most helpful. I have ordered the new RAM and feel confident (ish) about fitting it. I will follow your advice and hopefully the computer will recognise the extra stick and update but if not I may come back to you for further advice if you don't mind.

For now thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Kind regards and a Happy Christmas

@Lestalad,

You should be fine -your PC will recognize the RAM without any issues!
