Omen 25L
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have received conflicting responses from memory mfrs. regarding RGB ram for the Omen 25L (AMD Ryzen/Moria 3).    This is the most recent response:  "Your board would have to support SPD write to be able to control the DRAM.  This is something only the motherboard manufacturer can confirm for you. Please reach out to them to verify if the motherboard in that system supports controlling DRAM's RGB."  Corsair told me that their software would "bypass" the motherboard and be able to control RGB Lighting.  This didn't sound correct to me and I would like to get a better answer than the copy and paste responses out of the user manual that I get from HP customer service.  I just want some new, quality ram with simple blue lighting built-in.

Any RAM manufactured in the last 10 (or more) years has a small SPD chip on the stick of RAM, in additional to the larger chips (usually 4 or 8 or 16 chips per stick).

Similarly, any motherboard manufactured in the last 10 (or more) years supports SPD ("Serial Presence Detect") to allow the motherboard to query the SPD chip, to set the "timing" on the motherboard that matches the "timing" information on the SPD chip.

I am thinking that "SPD write" is quite different than the motherboard only "reading" the SPD chip.

So, the still-unresolved question is "does the  Omen 25L motherboard" support SPD-write?"

What responses have you gotten from HP Support?

Have you actually tried such a setup (special RAM with the software) ?

Can you purchase the RAM from a store that has a "no questions asked" return-policy?

Can you take your computer to a computer-store, where you can try-before-you-buy the RAM?

Following the advice of the last HP support tech I spoke with I adopted the "try it out" method.  I normally avoid this type of activity while working on a rather expensive piece of equipment but decided that simply swapping out the ram was safe.  I first tried the hyper-x fury 2x16 gb and their N genuity software failed to recognize the ram so it simply displayed the default rainbow pattern.  I returned it and ordered 2x16 of the Corsair Vengeance.  The Corsair agent I spoke with told me that their iCue software would be able to control the RGB ram on my specific motherboard (HP 87C3).  I'm interested to see what happens when it arrives.

I just installed the Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB ram (2x16) along with their iCUE software.  The software and ram are working perfectly.  I am able to fully customize and control the RGB features of the new ram despite what I was told regarding my motherboard not supporting RGB ram at all.  I think the confusion arose from the fact that while Omen command/Light studio and Hyper x Ingenuity will not recognize RGB ram in my case the Corsair iCUE does work.
