HP-RP5800
Ubuntu LTS

Hi

I own an old but trusty HP-RP5800 which is in need of a disk upgrade. I already have a 100Gb SSD and a 500GB HDD. I wondered if I could fit a NVMe 1Tb "disk" via a PCIexpress riser. My concern is that I don't know if this motherboard/BIOS combination will support NVMe. I don't want to boot from the new disk, just use it for storage.

All I can find about the mb is it's product name 1632, running Aptio 2.10.1208 from American Megatrends (2013).

I'd love to equip this PC with NVMe, I think it would make a great deal of difference.

Many thanks

Andy

Hello Andy,
Welcome to HP Support Community!

The HP RP5800 is an older model, and there are a few considerations to keep in mind when planning an upgrade with an NVMe drive via a PCIe riser.

  1. NVMe Support: The RP5800 originally doesn't support NVMe drives natively through its BIOS, which means you won't be able to boot from an NVMe drive. However, if you only intend to use the NVMe drive as additional storage, you can use a PCIe riser card to connect the NVMe drive.
  2. PCIe Riser: To use an NVMe drive with your RP5800, you will need a PCIe adapter since this system does not natively support NVMe slots. The PCIe lanes on the RP5800 can be used to add additional storage through this method.
  3. Storage Use Only: Since your intent is to use the NVMe drive solely for storage and not as a boot device, your current BIOS setup should be sufficient. You may not require any additional BIOS updates unless there's an available update that improves PCIe compatibility for devices like storage risers.
  4. BIOS Update: Given that the BIOS version you mentioned is from 2013 (Aptio 2.10.1208), it's essential to check HP’s support site for your model to verify if there’s a more recent BIOS version. While this won’t add NVMe boot capabilities, it might improve overall system stability or compatibility.
