Hi - I am one month past my 1-year warranty, and today the CD/DVD drive on the side of the machine apparently died.  I have had a problem with the door opening for 2-3 months...sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and I worked around that by keeping a paper clip handy.

However, today, not only will it not open by itself, it won't spin up, even with a disc in the drive.

I would like to take the back cover off the machine to check the power and data connections before deciding if I want to spend the money on a replacement drive.  Can anyone help?  I've googled, youtubed, and even HP-ed, with no luck.  I can find tutorials for similar machines, but this particular machine has a different style stand that is attached by what appear to be hex nuts, but neither my #3 or #2.5 hex wrenches fit the holes.

If anyone has knowledge or experience getting the back off one of these, I'd appreciate knowing!  And...if you happen to have any ideas what's wrong with my DVD drive, I wouldn't mind hearing that either.  🙂

Thanks in advance!

Instructions for removing the optical drive:  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05158546

I know HP has a stand tool (HP PN: 863822-001) specifically for these models to remove the base stand.  You can find that and all parts specifically for your model, here.  I am not sure which size hex/star that the base uses, as I can't find it in the documentation provided by HP.

Honestly, it might be best to just purchase a USB DVD drive so that you don't have to deal with servicing this unit or buying parts specifically for this machine.

Thank you for that link!  Exactly what I was looking for.  I did have some other hex tools that were sized differently, and found one that fit the screws, at least close enough to get them off...had to use a socket wrench, because the distance from the screw head to the stand base is too short for any of my screwdriver shaped tools.

Honestly, I agree that a USB solution would probably be cheaper, and definitely easier...it just bugs me that my 13-month old computer isn't 100% working.

Yeah, I totally understand the frustration with that.  I hope that you get it figured out though!
