I purchased a1050 TI mini card from EVGA.  Its the smallest one with a single fan.  Its a somewhat close fit, but it works.

In order to be able to use VR hardware, I subsequently purchased a used Zotac Mini GTX 1060 and  installed that as well as the 310 watt PSU.  It was a very easy install.  I did need to purchase a high quality SATA to 6-pin adapter (from modDIY) in order to get extra power for the card.   Its been working for a month of heavy usage.  No burning smell.  I would not recommend it with an overclockers card or with any higher spec card.  This one is very likely to only draw ~50 watts from the SATA line, even under load.  Others may seriously overburden the SATA line which is NOT designed for this usage and can only deliver 54 watts.  Also note that having SSD drives reduces the power drain on the SATA line as opposed to mechanical HDDs.

The Zotac card was a tighter fit due to the 6-pin power connecter wanting to reside in the same place as my second SATA drive data cable.

I did not need to alter any BIOS settings.

If anyone wants to follow in my footsteps with VR, be sure to:

- purchase a Club3D DisplayPort to HDMI adapter if you need such an adapter.  This is an active adapter and cheaper passive adapters won't work for hirez.  They will function but you will get no picture and think you are losing your mind.

- purchase a BATIGE USB 3.0 & HDMI to HDMI + USB3.0 AUX Extension.  This will save your card's built-in ports from frequent plugging/unplugging of cables

- look in to VR goggle mods from VR Cover and 3D printing websites

- (if you don't have built-in headphones) purchase Bionik Mantis headphones.  They fit a wide variety of headsets with Halo-style bands and sound pretty good.  You can spray them black with (removable) black Plasti Dip.

- (if you wear glasses) purchase a set of Harry Potter style minimal frames for cheap from Zenni Optical (#550021).  The lenses of these frames are used in many 3D printed VR goggle mods that you can print or buy online.  They also fit into just about every VR headset.
