Can I replace the defective L70042-002 power supply that is installed on my computer with the L70042-001? I tried to figure it out using HP PartSurfer https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer/ but when I enter L70042-002, There is no Where Used Products! The same response appears when I enter L70042-001. Connections and wiring for both power supplies are identical, the DC output on the stickers also match. Will it damage the computer if I install the L70042-001 power supply?

Hi:

According to the parts list for your PC, it uses a different power supply part number altogether.

HP PartSurfer

L81008-800
Power Supply - 180W ENT20 Gold

The part you mentioned exists, but HP does not sell it.

HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts

HP does not sell L70042-001 either.

They sell L81008-800, but it costs a fortune.  $320 USD!

According to the HP parts list, this is the 310W power supply for the M01-F1000ur PC, which I would think should also work in yours.

HP PartSurfer

L64961-800
Power Supply - GNRC PSU 310W Sirius2 ENT19 Full Range

The part is not orderable from HP.

I see both power supplies listed on eBay:

 L81008-800:

L81008-800 for sale | eBay

L64961-800:

Replaced L70042-002 PSU with L70042-001 despite some risk of doing so and computer works well. As I now believe, these power supplies are identical and replacing one power supply with another will not harm the computer.
