I  prepairing to replace optical drive in my computer HP Compaq dc7900 Small Form Factor. What happens when I replace the drive?

The "stock" (original) replacement part number for your optical drive is HP 419496-001 ("16X/48X DVD-ROM SATA optical drive - With front Black bezel").  You can get these units very cheap via eBay, for example.  Here's one of many available purchase options: https://www.ebay.com/itm/293459067773?hash=item445386037d%3Ag%3AXf0AAOSwpBdeOJdy&LH_BIN=1.

 

Nothing will happen when it is a straight optical drive replacement.  Your PC will automatically recognize the unit, and if necessary, update the driver.

The existing drive is 16x LightScribe hp DVD A DH16ABLH.  The new drive is hp DVDROM SH-216.
