HP md1000h Simple Save External Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Does HP support my product? I can't find any information on the website that it even exists. I have a problem restoring data from it.

Years ago, the product was supported.  I believe the product was introduced in 2009 (or thereabouts).

I am sorry this happened.

Problems with the Methodology

The backup software is proprietary - that is, the backups are configured using software that is unique to this process and not accessible by standard access (navigate to folder and find the data).  If you lose access to the software, if the software fails due to corruption, or even errors outside of the software itself, you cannot access your backups.

Oddly, the actual backup software is on the Drive itself - this is not in and of itself a big deal - but there have been reports of the software having problems and the software, because of its odd location had not been backed up before it had issues.  The result: no way to recover a decent copy of the backup software.  Because the backups can only be recovered using the software, the data is essentially lost.

The hard drives have been failing for years - I think I lost mine maybe five or more years ago.

Even if the drive does not fail, the power supply unit might fail - still same result:  cannot get to the data.

Hopefully, this is not the only location of the data.

If all else fails, and the data is important to you, take the drive to a licensed computer technician who has experience in forensic data recovery.

Personal Opinion - based on my experience:

  1. If you still have the original data, that is, the data in its original location,
  2. (Even) If you manage to repair or access the SimpleSave backup software and therefore gain access to the backups,
  3. Do NOT continue to depend on this outdated, vulnerable, and unsupported methodology to make backups of your data.
