HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0024
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently upgraded (or attempted to upgrade) my stock Ryzen 5 2400 CPU to the Ryzen 7 5700G. I upgraded the BIOS and the driver before attempting to install the new CPU. However, once installed, the computer is stuck in an infinite restart loop.

The only other upgrade I have made to the computer is the graphics card, the RTX 3060.

I know that according the the official HP specs, the highest upgrade possible for my model is the Ryzen 7 2700. But from what I've seen, there is very little difference between the 2700 and the 5700.

So my question is: is this upgrade possible at all, do I need to upgrade other components (power supply, RAM, etc.) before the CPU, or is this not going to work at all?

I am very much a newbie to all this.

Processor upgrade information

  • TDP: up to 65 W
  • Socket type: AM4
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
Processor
TDP
AMD Ryzen7-2700 (Pinnacle Ridge) 8 cores/16 threads
65 W
AMD Ryzen5-2600 (Pinnacle Ridge) 6 cores/12 threads
65 W
AMD Ryzen7-1700 (Summit Ridge) 3.0 GHz, 8 cores/16 threads
65 W
AMD Ryzen5-1600 (Summit Ridge) 3.2 GHz, 6 cores/12 threads
65 W
AMD Ryzen5-2400G (Raven Ridge) 3.6 GHz, 4 cores/8 threads
45 - 65 W
AMD Ryzen3-2200G (Raven Ridge) 3.5 GHz, 4 cores/4 threads
45 - 65 W
AMD AMD A12-9800 APU (Bristol Ridge) 3.8 GHz, 4 cores
65 W
AMD AMD A10-9700 APU (Bristol Ridge) 3.5 GHz, 4 cores
65 W
AMD AMD A8-9600 APU (Bristol Ridge) 3.1 GHz, 4 cores
65 W

even if it was possible that the processor is supposed to be compatible, since the motherboard is an HP motherboard
it will generally only support what is approved by hp
Usually no bios update, for other processors

but you say you also changed the graphics card, will it work if you have the original processor?

Internal 400 W PSU

exemple if this type

power supply 550W

The graphics card works with the old processor. I installed it about 2 weeks ago with no issues. It was only when I tried installing the new CPU when I ran into an issue. I put the old one back in and everything runs fine.

Looks like I'll be returning this one and just end up ordering the 2700. Thank you for your help.
