HP Slim Desktop - S01-pF1036
Microsoft Windows 11

I want to upgrade RAM and SSD of S01-pF1036. There are many compatible RAM and SSD models. I hope to understand the maximum speed that motherboard supports for RAM and SSD. In this way, I can buy the parts with best performance but not overkill. Does HP provide motherboard spec or user manual for S01-pF1036?

@w2prev,

Whilst pursuing my legacy/gaming PC upgrade projects, I have purchased quite a few different M.2 NVMe SSDs, some were (too) expensive, but mostly looking for enticing discounts on quality drives.  The WD_BLACK SN770 is most certainly one of those stand-out M.2 drive options on sale, as I very recently purchased another one:

This drive was intended as a secondary drive in an Asus PRIME X299-Deluxe gaming system:

Reason I wanted to show you this, is that this motherboard, like yours, can only run M.2 drives at Gen3 I/O speeds, even though the SN770 is a Gen4 drive.  Doesn't really matter: it remains a blisteringly fast drive with outstanding primary (boot) drive capabilities.  In other words: go for it!

Kind Regards,

@w2prev,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

Your HP Slim Desktop - S01-pF1036 as fitted with a BakerMS Motherboard (SSID: 8768), can be fitted with up to 2x32GB of DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, 288-pin RAM sticks.  Depending on what processor you got, 3200 MHz RAM will either down throttle to 2666 MHz (for example: i5-10400) or 2933 MHz (for example: i7-10700 or i9-10900).

Here is a very useful "HP System Slim Desktop S01-pF1xxx" User link with various drive options: UserBenchmark: HP Slim Desktop S01-pF1xxx Compatible Components.  For example, here are three of the very best performing M.2 NVMe SSDs installed by Users: WD Black SN770, Samsung 970 Evo Plus, WD Black SN750.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Hello NonSequitur777,

Your advice on RAM is very helpful. My CPU is Core i5-10400. So the DDR4 will be running at 2666MHz. Thanks.

For M.2 SSD, what is maximum throughput the mother board supports?

The 3 SSD you recommended have following maximum reading speed. If I buy WD SN770,  does the mother board support that speed?

WD Black SN770 - 5150MB/s

Samsung 970 Evo Plus - 3500MB/s

WD Black SN750 - 3600MB/s.
