HP ENVY Desktop PC - TE010150xt
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

On a brand new HP ENVY Desktop PC - TE010150xt  computer the  SD card reader is not recognized unless each time disable and then re-enable the driver via Device Manager.  Then the card reader is recognized as E: drive.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Followed your recommended fixes but still doesn't work.

Tried to update BIOS via Support Assistant but it indicated it didn't need updating.

Thank you for posting back.

Let's try this:

  1. Remove the card.

  2. Power off the notebook by pressing the power button.

  3. Restart the notebook and reinsert the card. The notebook scans for the card.

  4. Click Start, type Device Manager into the Search box, and press Enter. Click Device Manager in the search results.

  5. In the Device Manager, the card should be located within USB Devices, Drives, or Other Devices.

  6. Once the card is located, right-click on it and select Uninstall.

  7. Remove and reinsert the card. The computer scans for the card.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Ok, Great!  I carefully followed your recommended steps and uninstalled the SD host adapter called Intel SD Host Controller with driver ver. 10.0.18362.752.   the card was not recognized and is now invisible in Device Manager.  Before at least I could turn the card on by disable then enable.  Now I can't even do this.

More info if it might help.  This is a brand new desktop computer bought late in February.  HP ENVY Desktop PC - TE01-0150xt.

Prod. No. 7BB48AV.

There were 4 possibilities I could have uninstalled: USB CONTROLLERS a) Intel(R) USB 3.host controller; b) USB Composite Device and c) USB Root Hub (USB 3.0).

I selected SD HOST ADAPTER, called Intel SD Host Controller  with driver ver 10.0.18362.752 because I could make the card slot recognize the SD card by disable/enable this driver.

I did also note that under the USB CONTROLLERS - a) Intel (R) USB 3.1 and USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) the driver had a setting set to allow computer to turn off device to save power.  I haven't tried USB ports to see if they turn on if USB device is installed.  Now I'm afraid to try.

What Now??  I noticed the computer set a restore point before uninstalling the driver for the SD host adapter.  Should I restore to this restore point?

Right now I'm going to turn off the computer and restart with the SD card in slot to see if it is recognized.

Ok, I'm back partial good news.

When I restarted computer with SD card in the slot it restored the SD host adapter and recognized the SD card in the E: drive.

However when I pulled the SD card then reinserted card after a few moments it does not recognize it.   I can get it to recognize via disable/enable the driver.    SO I'M BACK WHERE I STARTED, BUT STILL NOT WORKING CORRECTLY.

Further info--  The computer does recognize the SD card if it is in the slot after restart from a complete shut down, but not from waking up from sleeping.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have just spent a couple of months getting and transferring all of my software and data files from my previous (working great) Windows 7 HP Pavilion a450n desktop computer.

I am not willing to redo all this work with a complete System Recovery on a brand new Windows 10 HP computer.  I will just have to live without the device working correctly.

It should be an easy task to somehow get the SD controller to power up (or always be powered up) and recognize the SD card when it is inserted.  Someone in the land of OZ should be able do this.  It works if you do complete computer restart. It works if you do a complete Disable/re-enable the SD card controller via device manager.  THE DEVICE WORKS, ITS JUST VERY INCONVENIENT.
