Hi @User993,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the SD card reader on your HP Desktop PC M01-F1000a is having trouble properly detecting your SD card, despite the fact that the same SD card works on other HP laptops. Since you've already reinstalled the drivers and the device manager doesn't show the SD card reader, there are a few potential causes and solutions you can try:

1. Check the SD Card Reader Connection

  • Ensure that the SD card is fully and correctly inserted into the reader. Sometimes, if the card isn't seated properly, it may connect and then disconnect.
  • Try different SD cards to see if the issue persists with all cards or just the one you are using.

2. Enable Hidden Devices in Device Manager

Since the SD card reader isn't showing up in the Device Manager, it might be hidden or disabled:

  • Open Device Manager (Right-click Start menu > Device Manager).
  • Click on the View tab and select Show hidden devices.
  • Look under the Disk Drives or Universal Serial Bus controllers sections to see if the SD card reader appears.
  • If you find it, right-click and select Enable device if it's disabled.

3. Check BIOS Settings

The SD card reader may be disabled in your BIOS settings:

  • Restart your computer and press Esc (or F10) repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Look for an option related to Media Card Reader or similar in the peripherals or devices section.
  • Ensure that the card reader is enabled.

4. Update Chipset Drivers

It's possible that your chipset drivers, which help manage communication between the motherboard and connected devices, may need to be updated:

  • Visit the HP Support page for your specific model and look for any updated chipset drivers for the HP Desktop PC M01-F1000a.
  • Install any relevant chipset or USB controller updates that might impact the SD card reader functionality.

5. SD Card Reader Driver from HP Website

If you haven't already, try downloading and installing the official SD card reader drivers from HP's support website:

  • Visit the HP Support page for M01-F1000a, and under the Drivers & Software section, look for SD card reader drivers or any specific drivers related to the card reader.

6. Check for Hardware Issues HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

  • Try connecting an external SD card reader to one of your USB ports to see if the desktop can read your SD card that way.
  • If the external reader works, the internal card reader might have a hardware issue. In that case, the internal card reader might need repair or replacement.

7. Windows Troubleshooter

You can also run the Windows Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter:

  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Scroll down and select Hardware and Devices, then run the troubleshooter to check for issues.

8. Test in Safe Mode

Boot your computer in Safe Mode and check if the SD card reader works:

  • Sometimes third-party software or drivers can interfere with the card reader functionality. Safe Mode disables these and runs only the necessary drivers.
  • To boot into Safe Mode: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and choose Safe Mode.
