I have an HP 595-0084 running Windows 11 and would like to upgrade from a disk hard drive to an SSD 2TB drive. I have been told older computers will not support the new drive. Is my PC one of those old units? Is there a way to accomplish the upgrade?

Hi:

If you are wanting to upgrade the 1 TB 3.5" SATA mechanical hard drive to a 2.5" 2 TB SATA SSD, that would be fine.

You will need to purchase a 3.5" to 2.5" hard drive enclosure to fit the smaller 2.5" drive where the 3.5" drive is now.

Something like this:

Amazon.com: ORICO 2.5 SSD SATA to 3.5 Hard Drive Adapter Internal Drive Bay Converter Mounting Brack...

If I'm not mistaken, your PC also comes with a 128 GB M.2 SSD.

You can upgrade that to a 2 TB NVMe SSD:

HP - Compaq Pavilion 595-p0084 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

Your PC's M/2 slot is PCIe Gen 3.0.

While a Gen 4.0 NVMe SSD will work, it will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds from the Gen 3.0 SSD slot.

This table shows the maximum transfer speed each PCIe slot generation can support:
