Yes, I follow the same instruction.

When I tried selecting the target SSD, the error shows "ensure that disk controller is enabled in the bios." I disabled secure boot and fast boot while legacy mode is enabled.

Btw, my desktop came with Winfows 8.1 whe I purchased, i believe, and free upgrade to Windows 10 was done a few years ago

I am confused.  What do you mean by selecting the target SSD?

The Win10 iso (from that Microsoft creation tool) was written to a USB flash drive correct?

With the MX500 SSD (2.5 disk) in place of the 128gb you need to boot the USB flash drive.  Windows install will see the 500gb drive and attempt to partition and format to install windows.

This just means that if you buy that 3rd party software it will have win8.1 on it and NOT win10..  This should not be done.

So, Microsoft upgrade for Windows 10 is considered as 3rd party software because it was not from HP??

Then, what should I do to get the factory system in a file/dvd? Do I need to download Windows 8.1 from MS?

Please see what I've done.

1. download Windows media tool  from MS site (via USB)

2. replace old SSD with a new SSD

3. boot from Windows 10 USB

4. initial setup done

5. boot up with the same screen "Windows Setup"

6. my com won't show the next step.

No. The 3rd party software I mentioned

http://www.computersurgeons.com/default.aspx

sells CD or DVD for older systems. If you ordered a "replacement" you would only get Windows 8.1 since that was what your system had.   You not need to order any software from them, you are registered at Microsoft for Windows 10 and only need to download the MediaCreationTool

At step 3 you booted the flash drive that that had the windows 10 install

Did windows recognize the 500gb drive?

Did it initialize the drive, partition and format it?

It then should have proceeded with the install of window 10

There is a video here that seem good.  What part went wrong?

Two parts are different from the instruction in youtube video. First, mine doesn't show the  "Activate windows" screen asking product key. I assume it doesn't matter.

Secondly,  I removed the USB after the initial setup was done, but the boot up screen says "boot disk error." So, the installation stops there.

MX500 doesn't seem to be compatible with old version of HP desktop computers.

I will try installing a different SSD.

Sorry, does not look good.

There are reports here that the Acronis provide by crucial does not work which confirms what you found.

https://www.amazon.ca/product-reviews/B003J5JB12/ref=acr_dp_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&rev...

You may want to replace it with a standard 2.5inch HDD.  I do not think your disk controller supports trim so probably a real HDD is better.

My opinion, worth about 2c.

Thank you for your assistance! It's been greatly helpful.

Today I exchanged Crucial with Samsung SSD 870 EVO, 2 TB, Form Factor 2.5”

It works just fine. I will need to leave a note for HP desktop owners:)
