I currently have a WD Black 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD loaded and want to upgrade to the WD Black SN850 1 TB version (an M.2 PCIe SSD). Is it compatible and what is the best way to replace considering the OS is on that as well as programs I don’t want to lose/reinstall? I saved a backup image to the HDD but not sure what to do next.

You can use standard and popular M.2 NVMe SSD drives on market today. Due to physical size (2280 format) you can use 2TB . Some vendors now sell 4TB but wait for few more years before jump to that.
The easiest way to move existing drive to new drive is cloning. Please use the following Guide
