HP Envy 795-0039c Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP Envy 795-0039c Desktop PC and I want to upgrade the SSD. The motherboard is Berks 844C H370.

Right now I have a SAMSUNG MZNLN128HAHQ-000H1 - 128 GB M.2 2280 SATA III 6 GB.

I want to upgrade to 1 TB, Does my motherboard support NVMe Interface of I have to stick to SATA III? I

I am trying to choose between Samsung 850 EVO M.2 2280 Or Samsung 960 Evo M.2 2280 NVME PCIe. I prefer the 960 which has faster transfer speed but I am not sure if it would be compatible with my PC.

Thanks.

Hi Houman007,

The 960 is good.

I have installed some 970 EVO Plus drives.

All of these drives are very fast when compared to a platter HDD.

I can't see a difference when comparing a NVME SSD drive to a SATA SSD in day to day usage. But the NVME drives benchmark up to four times faster than a SATA SSD.

Regards

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

Okay, you're using a SATA M.2 drive now.

This is interesting because HP typically only supports PCIe NVME stick drives on most consumer PCs.

You have a Socket 3 Key M connection.

This motherboard should support a PCIe 3.0x4 NVME drive.

The drive volume would not be a problem. A 1 TB NVME stick drive should work.

Your scenario is deviating from the norm. HP does not usually support SATA stick drives in M.2 sockets.

Have seen folks install SATA M.2 drives on consumer MBs which don't work because HP is only supporting PCIe protocol.

Thanks for the quick reply. You are correct, my motherboard has One M.2 socket 3, key M which should be compatible with PCIe X4.

Any suggestions on which Brand has a good and reliable NVME SSD? The reviews on Samsung 960 are good but not sure if there are other ones that are better.

Thanks.
