I'm would like to upgrade a HP Pavilion 590-p0053 with an SSD drive.

The M2 slot currently has an16 GB Optane Drive in it.

I bought a Crucial M2 SSD and the support was so bad I decided to return the drive.

I called Intel about their Intel® SSD 660p Series (1.0TB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x4, 3D2, QLC)

It is much faster than the Crucial Drive.

Before installing Intel recommends that I find out the following.

Documentation states that the unit has M.2 ports it features 3DX point technology to support the Optane but no further information is posted

1. I need to know does the M2. slot support PCIe 3.0 X4?

2. I also need to know is the slot generic drive  compatible in the HP Pavilion 590-p0053?

3.Will the Intel® generic firmware work or does it require the OEM firmware?

I have found that the documentation online insufficient. They don't even show what back ports are what.

I would greatly appreciate the correct answers.

I appears that others have installed Samsung SSD M.2 drives. The Intel tech said that if the unit is not compatible with a generic SSD M2 drive, over time the firmware may not work properly.

Thank you for your support and help.

@LizWebMobi Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you would like to upgrade the SSD.

Your motherboard has the following Expansion Slots. Please refer the following a link

  • One PCIe x16 socket

  • One PCIe x1 socket

  • One M.2 socket 1, 2230 type for WLAN

  • One M.2 socket 3, 2280 type for SSD

You can upgrade the M2 SSD.

Installing the SSD, there is no firmware is required.

You could purchase the part from HP, use the HP Parts surfer to identify the part: http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx

And order it via the HP Parts store: https://parts.hp.com/hpparts/CountryChoice.aspx?mscssid=&ccode=ZZ&lcode=ZZ

Or alternatively, Contact HP for setting up an order/service via phone support

@LizWebMobi,

If you just remove the optane SSD device, you OS will likely not Boot.

There are certain steps that need to be followed, some read on.
