SSD drive upgrade compatibility

Dear all,

I recently sought the advice of an online retailer as to what SSD drive would be compatible with my Pavilion 590-a0xxx. I was advised that the following kit would work on my desktop: Kingston UV500B 2.5-inch SSD Upgrade Kit

I purchased the above-mentioned kit, went through with the cloning of my disk and opened up my desktop, having watched some installation how-tos, to get the SSD in place.

However, I found that the SATA cable I had been supplied with had no corresponding connection on the motherboard of my desktop. The cable coming out of what I assume is my hard drive is marked ODD. Am I correct in assuming that I was wrongly advised by the online retailer and that there's nothing to be done but to send the SSD back? Or is there a workaround?

I have tried googling this but have not found any answers, so I ask for and appreciate your patience in answering the above, in the event it has indeed been answered before or is a very basic question.

What is the product number of your PC?

The product number can normally be found on the same label as the serial number.

Please do not post the serial number.

You would use the existing SATA data cable from the original hard drive for your new SSD (assuming you are replacing the existing hard drive with a 2.5" SSD).

It goes from blue port on the motherboard to the data cable input on your SSD.

The bigger one, apparently a 4 pin SATA is the cable I couldn’t find a connection point for. Am I understanding your reply correctly, that I can disregard the bigger 4 pin SATA and only use the second, smaller SATA cable?

You're very welcome.

There are two cables going to the original hard drive in your PC.

The data cable, and the power cable.

You remove both of those cables from the hard drive, and insert them into your new 2.5" SSD.

There is no need to use the cables that came with the SSD you bought

When you are replacing the existing mechanical hard drive with a SSD, you just swap the ends of the cables from the old drive to the new one.

While the old drive is much bigger, the power and data cable connections are exactly the same as on the 2.5" model.
