I picked up an old dc7700sff for a person who is of an age that likes floppies, this system is listed by HP as the only one that can support Windows 7.
I have loaded said OS with a 64bit version to maximise memory usage of 4Gb plus fast 2core cpu, all loaded in well and works quite OK copes with things without issue. Did have a problem with pci and serial in that they had no drivers loaded, "deluged" the system with a variety of my driver store of usb and dvd's and it found a suitable pci driver but no luck on a serial port driver.
I just like to have a clear board even if not used so could anyone tell me of a suitable driver for this machine please.
Also though its graphics is fine for the intended use just wonder if a better Low Profile PCIE x16 card exists than its onboard original that is within its power range (just to see if I can get it to beat the 3.5 rating it scored)
Many Thanks for any help........

Hi, @Deltatango
You need this driver for the PCI Serial Port...
Intel Local Management Service (LMS) and Serial-over-LAN (SOL) Support
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34501-35000/sp34744.exe
You may have to manually install this driver as follows...Run the file.
If you get an unsupported operating system error, or the file runs but doesn't install the device, close out of any error windows.
Go to the device manager. Click on the PCI Serial Port needing the driver.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp34744.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and the driver should install.

ok is the internet working first on this w7 workstation so Pnp plug and play can run ?
that is first
the chip that does this is the intel south bridge, and intel supporst that on w7 and so there for the microsoft pnp servers
if the cable to ethernet works then right click the dead device manger line and pick update.
end story.
so you meant you wanted the RS232C 9 PIN SERIAL PORT TO WORK(LEGAC7)
Well the driver is at HP,.on yoursupport page.
no body uses it now, but was used on your old PC for servicing enterprice ethernet switches etc.
SCH5317 ,HP added this chip because 232 is missing in the ICH 8 south bridge, intel kicked this to the curb long time ago
so HP added, it,so HP has itl
it must be turned on in bios, and is covered in the HP servcie manual. at hp.com your PC model.
Intel ich first chip 1999 ended the rs323 serial port, 810series, but for that was pentium III before that PIIX
so PCs that sell with Rs232, have add 1 chip called USART.

answer to GPU
2nd post
any GPU PCI-express works there, 75watts max or less.
if you stuff my power hogging gTX65o there that 30amps draw will crash the system
until you add 750watt PSU OR MORE, AND CONNECT THE AUX POWER CABLE FROM PSU TO THAT HOG.
I RUN THE GTX1050 NOW, IT SCREAMSFAST WITN 75 WATTS MAX, NO HUGE PSU NEEDED.
LOVE MY 1050 , COOL QUIET AND FAST.

Many thanks for that link have downloaded it and will give it a try, HP showed no drivers for that model listed as Dell also removed any listings for XP or Vista driver based machines (unless you know exactly where to look) in their bid to "kill off" older systems.
I would have simply given 7 the opened drivers to sniff through and pick the bits it wanted as it almost always would have rejected it during normal install methods, but without its original set it gets harder.
Many thanks from davidt

Great stuff! expanded the file showed win 7 the info file, straight in with no problems.
HP always these little fun issues, nice clean sweep of happy working hardware (even if is not used) just in case.
