Hi everyone. I just bought a used HP Z440 Workstation that is still in good working condition. It has the original HP Z440 motherboard, Xeon E5-2699 v3 CPU, 64GB RAM (16GB*4), and a 700W PSU.
I’m planning to hook up 4 12TB drives and run RAID5 on the 4 sSATA ports, a 1TB SSD on one SATA port (for the OS), and a 2TB SSD on the other SATA port (for data of each OS). My plan is to run Proxmox and install TrueNAS for a home media server with films, shows, and music.
Additionally, I plan to buy a PCIe 3.0 to NVMe 3.0 expansion card. I intend to install 2 1TB SSDs to use as cache and log for TrueNAS. The Z440 has 2 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and 1 x8 slot. I plan to install an Intel Arc A580/A750/A770 GPU in Slot 2 to use for encoding and decoding with Jellyfin. The expansion card for the 2 NVMe SSDs will go in Slot 4 (x8), and in Slot 5 (x16) I will install a dual NIC 10GbE card (either X550-T2, X710-AT2, or X710-TL2).
Does anyone know the storage capacity of all 4 sSATA ports and 2 SATA ports? Also, what is the maximum capacity of each port?
I did a quick research, and it seems that each SATA/sSATA port on the Z440 only supports up to 4TB. However, I couldn't verify this information from the sources I found. Should I consider switching to a new motherboard? If so, do you have any suggestions? I would need the motherboard to have 2 built-in 10GbE NIC ports, but if not, I will buy a separate PCIe card instead.
I appreciate all the contributions.
