HP ENVY - 17m-ae111dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm interested in getting a monitor for my laptop, and HP Envy 17 and the graphics card as I believe is a Nvidia UHD Graphics 620. To that end, the monitors I mostly have my eye on 4k 32" monitors, even gaming ones but if I'm kinda forced to just settle with a 27", that's fine. I'm just not aiming to pay about $1k+ for the really good I'll be mostly be doing working in art programs and watching media more than gaming, though. My question is if there's suggestions that are best with this laptop or do I need to get like a DisplayPort hub or cables so the quality of the monitor's features aren't diminished.

Hi @PetitePinkTiger,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

Your HP ENVY 17m-ae111dx, equipped with Intel UHD Graphics 620, can support external monitors with reasonable performance, but its limitations affect the ability to utilize some high-end features of 4K monitors, especially at high refresh rates or with HDR.

Here's how to choose a monitor and optimize your setup:

Monitor Recommendations

Resolution & Screen Size

  • A 4K monitor (3840x2160) will work well for your needs, especially for art and media. A 32" size offers more screen real estate, but a 27" screen at 4K also provides excellent sharpness (higher PPI).
  • If your budget allows, consider these options:
    • Dell UltraSharp U3223QE (32", 4K, IPS, factory-calibrated, ~$1,000)
    • LG 32UN880-B Ergo (32", 4K, adjustable stand, ~$700)
    • HP Z27k G3 (27", 4K, good color reproduction, ~$600)

Panel Type

  • For art programs and media, an IPS panel is ideal for accurate color and wide viewing angles.
  • Look for monitors with a wide color gamut (e.g., sRGB 99% or AdobeRGB coverage).

Features to Consider

  • HDR: The Intel UHD 620 can handle basic HDR content but may not fully utilize high-end HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Choose HDR-capable monitors accordingly.
  • Refresh Rate: Stick with a standard 60 Hz for media and work, as your laptop's graphics are not optimized for gaming.

Connectivity

The HP ENVY 17m-ae111dx has:

  • HDMI 1.4: Limits to 4K @ 30 Hz, which is suboptimal for a smooth experience.
  • USB-C (with DisplayPort): Supports 4K @ 60 Hz if your USB-C port includes DisplayPort Alt Mode (confirm in your specifications or test). If it does not, you may need an adapter or docking station.

DisplayPort Hub or Adapter

To avoid diminishing monitor features, ensure the correct cables or hubs:

  1. USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter: If your USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, this is the best option for 4K @ 60 Hz.
  2. HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter: Use this if your laptop's HDMI output must connect to a monitor's DisplayPort for better compatibility.
  3. Docking Station: A USB-C hub with multiple DisplayPorts or HDMI ports can simplify your setup if you plan to use additional peripherals.

Oh thank you very much~! This definitely helps a lot in guiding me along to what can work with this laptop. I don't know if even upgrading my graphics card will help but it still sounds like it's not necessary either. I admit the Dell monitor is a bit out of my preferred budget range but I would still be likely to handle it. I'll keep all the advice in mind, I appreciate it lots~

Also out of curiosity, I was looking at this monitor beforehand and wondered if it was potential fit as well, regarding the

'Dell 32 4K UHD Gaming Monitor - G3223Q'

Hi @PetitePinkTiger,

The Dell 32 4K UHD Gaming Monitor - G3223Q is a solid option, but there are a few considerations when pairing it with your HP ENVY 17 and its integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 (not NVIDIA, based on the GPU specs). Since you’ll primarily use the monitor for art programs and media consumption, this setup can work.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
